Rear spoiler curtain

Marc:
Is this the switch? The switch stick seems to have a forward, center and rear locations when you move back and forth. I moved it and nothing happened...car was off. Must I start the engine to get the switch to work? I need to know if must join the "Duct Tape Club", hope not.
Thanks for the help!

Sure looks right - I have only seen it in pictures but it is likely the switch. I have a 1991 so my switch is on the console.
Yes, your ignition will have to be on for it to work.

I just replaced mine. It's not a difficult job but $117 (dealership) is a lot to pay for a chunk of plastic. If it splits again I think I'll try the black tape method.
For what it's worth, I haven't noticed any difference in engine temp or handling at normal highway speeds (below 100 mph) - although the wing doesn't shake anymore.

While we're in the area, does anybody else have a squeaky spoiler? Mine squeaks constantly when deployed, and it's driving me crazy. I've tried graphite lube on everything that looks likely with no joy. Suggestions gratefully received!

IIRC, I saw a thread a while back about someoone who took the mechanism apart and lubed the plastic drive wheels - seemed to work.

Darryl,
You'll most likely need need bearings in the drive mechanism, they aren't hard to do, just time consuming, cost a couple of dollars tops.
I think the P-car site has a write up on this.

My spoiler surround (body color portion) has cracks on each side, as marked in green in pictures below (resolution too low to see actual cracks). These cracks are about 1mm wide (maybe less, but there are gaps). Are these cracks caused by spoiler vibration due to broken spoiler wall? Has anyone here has similar problem? Thanks!

Thanks for the suggestions on the squeak. I tend to think it's in the mounting hardware somewhere 'cuz if I grab the spoiler and wiggle it back and forth, it squeaks like crazy. I'll have a check on the bearings and gears, though.

FYI, the switch in the back of my '89 C4 (see photo above) does work. It allows you to adjust the spoiler to any heigth you would like. Thus it is not just an all up or all down switch. Again, Porsche and their gadgets. Engine must be on...duh.

I used tape. Clean the surface with acetone and, I recommend, use real duct tape that the HVAC guys use, which is not the fabric stuff. It is an aluminized product that is really sticky and tuff. I spray painted it dull black on my shield. It will never, ever come off.
Not that I have anything against the fabric duct tape. Half the things in my life have some of it stuck on it somewhere!

OK guys this has to stop. I decided to have another look at my squeaky spoiler today, and now the spoiler wall is broken. And no, I didn't break it. It was intact last weekend, I've only driven the car twice since then, and now the darn thing is in three pieces. (I removed two so they wouldn't flap around and damage something until I get a new one.) Is there a timer running on these things? Is there bad karma in even talking (typing) about them? Do I have to stop reading about other people's troubles in order to avoid my own car having the same problem? Do these cars know we're talking about them behind their backs and decide to punish us? Arghh!
