Default Will the 993 Rear window fit the 964?

I asked this on the Pelican site, but no reaction. Here's the deal. I really hate the third brake light on the top of my rear window. Being 6'3 the thing really blocks my rearward visability. I have taken it out and now have a black ring where it used to be which looks bad. I am concidering tinting the glass, but I really want to get rid of that ring. I thaught first about asking my fellow Renners in europe about shipping one over, but I am sure that would be big bucks. Then I was thinking the 993 has a led type wing style High mound third brake light. I was wondering if I could just order the rear glass for my car and loose the black ring.

Will it fit? Any one ever do this? And yes I know it will increase my likely hood of getting rearended, but I really hate that High mount lamp and willing to risk it. I think the USA is the only country that has this standard.

We have those third brake lights too - I'm 6' 1" and it blocks my rear view too.

Canada has the third light. I am willing to have a glass sent over from Europe I hate it so much...but I think the 993 might be the ticket, just have to verify it fits...keep digging.

I had the same problem with my C2 when I bought it. My main complaint, was that I couldn't watch for the CHP in the rear view mirror.

I bought the 911/930 roof spoiler from Performance Products with the third brake light, had it painted Grand Prix White, and installed by my favorite mechanic. I had him do it, because he rerouted the third brakelight wire through the rubber around the window, and now I have a very noticable brake light. A big benefit on the highways in CA.

If you have a very steady hand, you can use a small dremmel tool to remove the black ring around the old light. You must be very careful, or you will break some of the conductors for the rear heated window.

Here's how it looks:

What bit did you use on the dremel and how did you not hit the defroster wires? Did you have to polish the glass?

As you can see from the last picture I have not removed the black rim completely. I started with the small wire brush head, and realized that it would be better if I had the flexible extension, so that I didn't have to hold the entire dremel while trying to miss the defroster wires. I got the attachment, but am now beginning a rebuild of the engine. Needs to be done first, as otherwise all i get is a clearer view of my garage door!

Also, if you have the rear wiper, you will need to use a smaller wiper with the spoiler. I just rotate one of the fronts to the back when I change them. It works nicely.

If you change the rear wiper arm to the more robust 993 part with twin springs you will find it is slightly shorter - and fits like a glove with the brake light spoiler.

Ask me how I know!!

No the 993 rear glass window will not fit the 964.
Ciao,
Adrian.

Pete,

Did you consider using glass from a pre-'86 911 Carrera? The third brake lights were mandatory on 1986+ model years (US) cars.

Sundog- Did you use the same wiring that was there for the "cyclops" to wire your new third brake light spoiler? I also cannot stand how that thing blocks my view and have been considering one of these 993 spoilers for a while. Already have the tinted window so maybe the black ring would be less noticeable.
By the way it looks great!

Yes, it was the same wiring as for the original cyclops. Just drilled a small hole throught the existing rubber around the window, sealed it with silicone, and plugged it in to the spoiler.

Default Basket Handle Solution

I had the same frustration with the 3rd brake light. so I took it out and replaced it with the 993 "basket handle". If Adrian says the 993 window is a no-go then I guess I'm in the same boat as everyone else. Either leave the ugly black frame or find another rear window with rear wiper hole and defroster wires that fits. Who's got the answer?

Regards,

Jim

Thats a bummer on the 993 glass not fitting. Now for plan 2 will a pre 86 back glass fit. I imagine they are an easy find. I am lucky and do not have a rear wiper. I will try the wire brush on the old dremel this weekend. There has to be a better way than shipping a window form Europe!
