Hi Andrew,
I got out my car's records from the previous owner and in 1995 a problem similar to yours was noted and fixed by changing out the CCU under warranty. I popped out the unit this morning and on it was 993 659 047 00....identical to Randall's photo. If you look at the photo, on the lower right hand corner is the sensing fan housing and the white and blue wires are power to that fan.

Thanks guys! I spoke to the actual mechanic today (not the service manager), and he said it is definitely the "00" item number, like you guys said. Vertex is calling me with a price Monday. The good thing for now is I took my car back while I'm waiting for the call Monday and receipt, and gave the car a good driving today...perfect weather!!
I was waiting all winter for a day like this!
How does the unit pop in and out? Is it easy?

This morning, I was helping Arnie troubleshoot his interior fan that won't shut-off (not the little one for the temperature sensor) . Was a little surprised to learn that the part number for his '91's CCU was 964-659-047-00. In addition, when we brought it out of its box, we found that my original/spare CCU is also 964-659-047-00 (pic below). As written earlier, according to PET, 964-659-047-00 is for '89-90, 964-659-047-01 is for '91 and up, and is what I expected to find in Arnie's and my own car. Perhaps Porsche jumped G1 to G19 in the wiring harness in '91, but continued to use up the old 00 suffix stock, before installing the new 01 suffix unit? Dunno'.

Anyway, this does demonstrate that an older model CCU will work in a later model 964.
Instructions on how to remove the CCU can be found here:

Good luck, and keep us posted.

Thanks for the removal instructions Randall- I figured something went in those holes and it slid out. Now I know to put up a fight if these guys try charging me $500 for the replacement/diagnostic labor...
