Post 1/2 Roll Cage

I have heard that a removable bolt in 1/2 cage is available for the 911 which sits on the rear wheel arches and the sills and is bolted in to the holes for the rear seatbelt mountings

Can any one help.

Ignore the above, I have just spoken to a race equipment supplier here in the UK who says that he has heard of them, but they are completely useless and offer little or no protection.

I am going to fit a bespoke 1/2 cage with a fixed diagonal and bolt it in properly to the arches and sills

George,

I think your race equipment supplier may not be familiar with the options. On the 89 and earlier 964's, one of the few, if only, bolt in options comes from Dougherty (DAS) in the US. That bar is SCCA/PCA accepted for racing, sits on the sills (and not the rear wheel arches/well), and is quite solid (I had one in my SC). Their bar for the 964/993 uses a cross bar that crosses the passenger compartment as the base for that rollbar. It is a different design, because the 964 doesn't have lower sills like the pre-89 911's have. You can view it here <a href="http://www.das-sport.com/data/964bar.html." target="_blank">http://www.das-sport.com/data/964bar.html.</a> Safety Devices, in the UK, does make bolt in rollbars, but they require a footing to be welded onto the lower sills first on pre-89 911's. (Don't know how their 964 product mounts, however) Last I checked, their rollbar was too thin for PCA racing, although their rollcage was OK.

As a related aside, I wouldn't recommend any rollbar that bolts to the arches/wheel well (perhaps drilling holes to fit), as the arches/wheel well isn't a load carrying panel.

Bill

Thanks for the info, really useful stuff

Ideally I would like to fit a cage which would not need too much drilling to fit.

The link however to their website doesn't seem to work

My car previously had a full cage which was extracted by the previous owner, the rear wheel arches had been drilled.

George,

Try this link. My apologies - I tried to get one directly to the page. <a href="http://www.das-sport.com/data/dassportnew.html" target="_blank">http://www.das-sport.com/data/dassportnew.html</a> Click on "rollbars" then "964/993". After you click on rollbars, there's a picture part way down of how one of their rollbars held up in a rollover. Here's a pic of the 964 bar from the DAS website.

George -
Here are some more pics of a DAS bar installed in my car.

<a href="http://people.ne.mediaone.net/jbalthasar/safety.htm" target="_blank">http://people.ne.mediaone.net/jbalthasar/safety.htm</a>
Bolts into the car in about 30-45 minutes, and comes out in about 20-30 minutes. Certainly easier to get in and out with the top down

Jack

My server will not open the link, could you paste a copy of the photo instead

Do you have harness mounts on it? I currently have a three point harness for the driver picking up the mount on the rear shelf. I would rather have the harnesses mounted with eyelets straight on to the roll bar

George,

I would like to help with regards to your cage.

We fit the German Heigo cages, these are bolt-in and can be half or full.

I have three or four cars in the shop at the moment that have these cages, I will try and post a picture tomorrow.

These cages offer good protection, and once installed IMHO look aesthetically the best.

The time to buy the DAS rollbar is when Performance Products has a 20% off sale. Around $650 (give or take) then.

Some good pictures on the link to Jack's site, of the DAS bar mounted in a cab.

As you look at others, ask if they meet racing series specifications for rollbars. PCA Club Racing rollbar specs are for &gt;1500lbs, mild steel 1.75"x.120" and alloy steel 1.625"x.095".

I have a DAS roll bar in my RS America, I was not an easy install, If you have a rear package tray, you must weld in the supplied adapter plate, because there is no mounting lug in those cars. I knew all that before I placed the order, so that was no suprise. My Problem with them,is the wait. I placed an order on 9/21/01 and didn't get it till over 3 months later, then they forgot the adapter plates, another 2 weeks. I must have made 20 calls to them, It wasn't until I complained to Performance Products, that they shipped. The problem is they wait till they have enough orders in hand to, have their supplier, make the parts, for a production run. If you have the poor luck, to be the first on the list you are in for a long wait. I was told of someone that waited 6 months. I am happy that it is in, and very pleased with it, but I'm glad I didn't need it for an event. They did offer a loaner, which was good of them. If you do order one, leave enough time to paint or powder coat it( my pref.) it comes in raw steel.
Don't get me wrong, the product is great, the service needs improvement.
