Default Oil change. UK low cost source of Mobil 1?

Changing the oil whilst I'm replacing the thermostat..

Most of the places I have tried will only do trade quantities, but hopefully I can do better than halfords, about £35 for four litres?

Yep, Costco is about £20 + vat for 4 litres; it's 0W 40 though, and I tend to run 15W 50.

However, as mine uses only a little oil, I'm tempted to top up with 0W 40 - only a couple of litres between services...

Now there's a debate we don't want to get into!

Thanks Chaps, you may have saved me 30 quid just like that..
But, Costco's only wholesale, no? Do you both own corner shops?

BTW, Rob why do you use 15-50? Not to stop leaks, shurely..

Johnny,

Peter at Motortune tells me that the best oil for my car is 10/40, and that as these engines get older the very thin synths are not the best choice. Make of this what you will (don't want to start the oil argument again), but he uses Castrol Magnatec 10/40 (curiously also the oil of choice of Hartech in Bolton). Good enough reccomendation for me anyway.

I have been using Volkswagen's own brand oil (Quantum Synta 10/40 semi synth) in my VW's and in previous Porsches and it seems excellent, and is even listed as Porsche approved. More to the point it is the cheapest decent oil I can find anywhere, about £16 for 5 litres at the VW garage in Kirkcaldy. (the garage sucks, but their part guys are super helpful). I plan to be feeding this stuff to my 964 in the near future.

You might also consider Halfords own brand fully synth, which I am told is actually an older superceded blend of Mobil 1, re-sold under the Halfords brand. Truth or urban myth? ... dunno, but I have been using it for years too and it is great oil, occasionally on special offer at killer prices.

McJohn

PS Just been for a blast round the west coast, and the big blue beasty is going like a good 'un!

I used Synta Gold fully synthetic for years. The company making the oil keeps changing but the spec is on the button. Lowest price full syn. I ever found.

It's what PCT use; mine's a late model and doesn't have any leaks, but I also don't want to 'encourage' any...

Anyway, topping up with 0W 40 seems to be OK.

Re Magnatec...it's not synthetic is it? Does that matter?

Hi Chaps.
Sorry, I let the thread lapse, and then went on holiday.

John H, glad the motor is going well. Got used to the steering feel, then?

Magnatec looks quite tempting, alltho the magnetic thing is most likely a gimmick.. I know you shouldn't mix synth and dino oil (and there will be undrainable synth left in my car when I change the oil out)..but I guess its not a problem. Does semi synth count as dino? Its certainly a lot cheaper, and if its good enough for Hartech and Motortune..

Hi Johnny, indeed I am getting used to the steering, all the more so as I have just come back from a couple of days of serious hooning up north, along with a friend in a new 987 Boxster, very impressive car that!

Please someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I have always assumed that semi-synth oil was simply a blend of dino and synth. I mean, what else could it be? If this is true, then there is no issue about mixing dino and synth. I am happy to be proven wrong though!

Hiya McJohn
The problem that you might have mixing oils is that it has not been tested , you might have no problem at all but why would you run the risk .
If semi-synth has been tested and found to meet the specs , then you know its good .
If you make your own mix of oils , they haven't been tested mixed together and you dont know what specs they now might meet .
The additives in the dino oil will do what to the synth base at temp and pressure ?
If you mix together dino 10-40 with synth 10-40 do you get 20-80 or 0-10 or 0-80 ?
