Post Sigla / Pilkington windshield question

Hi guys,

I need a new windshield. I checked out several suppliers.

One came up with a Pilkington windscreen ( green band and antenna) for 310 $.

The other one came up with a Sigla ( green band and antenna included) for 365$.

Which one do I choose ? I don't care about the price difference but I want the best quality out of those two.

Thanks guys,

I have the Pilkington one. It was replaced by the previous owner. It seems to fit well, has no leak issues, seems to have good optics, and radio reception seems fine.

Other than from a perfectionist stand point, the optics of the glass on a 911 are not as important as on many other cars since the windshield is so verticle.

Go with the Sigla. It is the approved replacement. I have the Sigla now and I am very happy with it.
However regardless of which you choose make sure they use the correct Porsche seal. Do not use aftermarket versions and make sure they correctly install the glass. It must be glued or sealed into position. Do not accept anything less than following the official installation procedures.

I just replaced my Siglia with a NEW Siglia!

I haven't seen the Pilkington, but Siglia is the official replacement.

As for the seal, do ensure that you get a factory one...and if you clean out the flange in the body where the seal goes, "gluing" the windshield in isn't required...although you may have a leak later on (although you're not supposed to) and can have a glass shop inject some sealant in there to alleviate the issue.

Installation of a 911 windshield is a BI___! ...just as ANY shop that has done it.

It is pretty much a two-man job and a fairly high risk of breaking the windshield...which would surely tick you off as that would take another $300 out of your pocket and leave you screaming for a professional to take on the task.

I was able to get a new windshield (Siglia) PLUS installation for around $315...they offered to do the side windows for $25 each so I took them up on the offer!

...I was too busy putting the engine back in to have to worry about all that!

Dear Jeff,
If you want to avoid rust you seal the windscreen. If you had seen what I have recently you would not ignore the Porsche procedure. It is much cheaper sealing and doing the job properly than fixing up the rust problems which follow, especially here in Europe.

Hi guys,

Concerning glueing the windscreen. I was told by a windscreen shop that Porsche only started glueing windscreens from 1994 on.

Is this correct ? Not that it would change my idea of glueing my windscreen as I plan to glue it anyway.

Another question about the seal. Whats the price of an original Porsche windscreen seal ? Does it seems correct that I can buy an original Porsche windscreen seal for 80$ on a known online UK Porsche parts supplier ? I thought it costed about 150$ !!

Thanks guys ..

Here I am with my usual 'windscreen/windshield' caveat!

When the new seal goes in, to ensure a 'factory' finish, ensure that the joint is positioned exactly at the bottom, centre.

Anyone care to take over this phrase for me - this must be the tenth or twelve time I've used it on Rennlist!

Hi Guys

I'm confused - are you saying the rubber seal which surrounds the windshield should be glued to the body or are you saying the windshield should be glued into the rubber seal - or both?

I had the original (quite pitted) Porsche windshield in my car with a Pilkington - I agree with PK's comments - it looks great and fits perfectly.
