Which Ski Rack?
I'm looking to get a ski rack for my 964. Could anyone comment on personal experience. I am familiar with the Thule system but have also seen on earlier 911s a rack which attaches to the engine bonnet and keeps the skis fairly in line with the 911 sloping roof.
While Thule makes an excellent product, I prefer Yakima. I have a setup for my 964 that was purchased when I owned an SC, it worked on both of them as the "rain gutters" are the same on both vehicles.
I use it to carry my Mountain Bike and/or Road Bike, wherever I go...unless I'm trailering the car, in which I have skewers mounted to the trailer that place my bikes on either side of the car.
The main issue I have with Thule is that their bars are square, making adjustability of the various accessories a little limited where Yakima bars are round, allowing 360deg. of adjustability and a more modernized look, in my opinion.
Basically, to get started in your setup, whichever one you decided to use, you just have to buy a set of towers (roof clamps) and a pair of bars. That's the basics...then you can add any accessory you prefer to them whether it's to carry bikes, skis even a kayak.
I've even seen people rig a setup to carry their track tires to the track!
If using Yakima, you will need to purchase a set of four "1A Raingutter" towers, about $90, and a pair of bars, about $45. Buy the bars a little long as they are aluminum and easy to cut to length, there are neat little plastic caps included for that "finished" look.
I have pics of the setup on my SC that I can email immediately, if you want some pics of the setup on my 964 (NO different) you'll have to wait a few days for me to get the drivetrain back in!
Either way, you're more than welcome to email me personally if you want pics.
