You might consider keeping the original wheels one the car....it looks great, but don't sell them.
Post on the 964 Turbo Bd.....there is a gentleman in Houston who has a '91 C2 Turbo the same color, I think..
Congratulations !!!!

Randal- nice 968 too! What do you mean the 964 was "put back together"- was it in an accident? In my opinion the stock 17 inch cup rims on your car are some of the nicest Porsche ever maid- simple and bold at the same time. I like them better than the twist rims, and if it were my car I would leave them on, especially since they are the rims originlly offered with this vintage car. Of course I'm biased as my cab has the same rims

Andrew,
Great picture of a tremendously strong piece of functional engineering. Perfectly suited to its purpose. Beauty in its brutality. Built to last forever and survive all sorts of problems. Virtually invincible. Incredible machine!
And a tank.

""Randal,
How was your experience with that seller? I've seen a few other cars from that seller that seemed to be interesting.
Thanks,DGlenn"
The seller has lots of nice cars, but you really need to check them out very well.
""""Randal- nice 968 too! What do you mean the 964 was "put back together"- was it in an accident? """
No It has been in no accidents
I went ahead and did a 60K service on this car since it is new to me and I wanted to see inside out and run a leakdown test. Took the pans\Covers off. and did a very though check of everything
The Car is in Fabulous shape :-)

Randell- great and good luck with it! I don't know if anyone answered your original question of what common problems are with these cars as we all get so excited at a new 964, but as you read other posts you'll get an idea of a few of the more common issues. Some of the earlier cars (89-90 or 91) could develop some oil leaks at the head, but by 92 or so they had that sorted out (and many owner's of leaking 89-90 or 91 cars had any bad leaks fixed by now). Some cars had problems with the dual mass Freuidenburge clutchs wearing out prematurely, but that was changed with roughly the May 1992 build of cars, when the factory started using the more reliable "LUK" dual mass clutch units- your OK with both oil leak and clutch.
Other than that, some people have minor electrical glitches: ABS light stays on and has to be "reset" by a mechanic, or airbag light stays on and must be reset.
Also, I have my car at the shop as we speak getting the HVAC unit looked at as the tiny fan inside the unit (you can see the slots by the fan switch) keeps running and is draining my battery- the fan is used to suck in sample air from the cabin for the temperature guage.
If you hear this tiny fan running or a fan in the engine compartment running after you turn the car off, don't necessilary worry as they may run for up to 20 minutes after shutting off the car- the HVAC unit fan in my car runs forever and drains the battery eventually. Bottom line, you should have one very reliable car, and from the pictures I saw on ebay, this car looks to be quite clean and well cared for!
By the way John B. I was laughing when I read your comment! I wouldn't want to go "toe to toe" with that tank, but I'd race it (on paved roadways) anyday-

Randal-
You're probably fine (I hear mine too when I turn the ignition key on) as long as it shuts off when you turn the key off. Have you had a chance to drive the car much yet? How do you like it compared to your 968 (both very different cars)? Is this your first 911?

Hi Andrew
No I have had 911s before ,it is a differant car from the 968, The 964 has more torque and has quicker steering (ratio wise) the 968 has more room and handles better. They are both really world class sports cars.
I would like to have the very large removeable top off the 968 and the 6 speed from it in my 964, but can't have everything.
All In all these are 2 of the cars I would most like to drive

I was very suprised\glad to see no leaks at all when we removed the bottom pan.
My mechanic advised to leave the bottom pan\engine cover off, as he says the motor cools much better with it gone, and heat is a problem on 3.6 engine...
any comments \ advise

Well, I looked at a car that had the cover off by the motor, and I counted that as a negative on that car because it was not attached and was not with the car (the car had several other issues and I wound up passing on it before getting the car I bought).
Is it a pain to put back on- maybe he just wanted to leave it off because it was more of a pain in the butt for him to re-install. That cover is there for aerodynamics- to give the underbelly of the car a streamlined smooth surface. I haven't had my car in the hot summer yet since owning it, but on the couple of days I drove it when it was warm out, it didn't really heat up much. I haven't heard that the 3.6s were hot running motors...I would keep it on, but that's just my opinion.

No He had no problem putting it back on as I can do that too , and I kept the pan and bolts in case I want it back on.
But I also see how it has too hold heat in the engine compartment
I went back and asked again about the cover, They have lots of experince with all Porsches, I was told that the cover Does no question hold a lot of heat in the engine compartment. I looked at the car with it on and I can see how the heat from the exhaust would be much higher.
So I have decided to keep it in my basement for a while instead of on the car...
Thanks
Randal
