Post I have a 'cheeky'...

...personalised number plate for sale. It is N1 CME and reads 'N1C ME'. I am opened to all reasonable offers. UK plates so I guess UK memebers only.

I am from the USA and don't understand the concept of "Plate" in the UK. Could someone please explain or point to a URL with information on this issue. I would love to read more about it.

Why do they cost so much?

When you sold a car, you keep your plate?

And why some plates are more expensive than others?

Thanks,

Sonny Vo

Hi Sonny,

The plates being refered to are vanity license plates. They are legal plates that you can buy with your own choice of slogan or letter/number combination. Usually cost $100-500, depending on the jurisdiction. In some places, obviously, they can be traded to a new owner.

Examples might be:

BCINGU (Be Seeing You)
HOWRU (How Are You)

An Eric Clapton fan, like myself, might get "LAYLA" (in fact, I did!).

Hope that answers your question.

Well, as usual in the UK everything is a rip off!

If we want a private plate we need to stick to a certain combination of letters & numbers. Hence its hard to really have what you want on it (for example, I could only have R1CKY not RICKY and not RICK either).

Prices start at £250, but most will be between £1000 and £5000. The most expensive I have seen is RR1, asking price £50,000!!!

Its a joke!

Cheekiest I saw was a woman driving a 911 Cab

Near my house is an old chap driving Pre 1950s RR with OO7 - hmmmmmm.

C4 POR was up for £10,000 recently.
My C4 PSH (well I know what it means) only cost me £300.

Thanks everyone for your explanation.

But really, what makes a plate more desirable? Is it because of the rarity, like a old classic car? and the price is based on the owner's asking, right?

Here is my plate "911Rules" on C2 Turbo for $40 a year from California.

Regards,

Sonny,
As noted above by Riccardo, in UK we pay higher prices compared to ROW. For starters your plate would not be allowed in UK. IF it was to be allowed, the cost would probably shatter the current 'world record' for the cost of a number plate - £250,000 for K1 NGS.

Incidentally I did also spot the plate 'F355 RED'. I would leave you to guess what car and colour it was on!

Chris Eubanks - former would middleweight boxing champion has got the appropriate plate IMHO - 1 KO. True to his character though it was on a TRUCK! Those of us in the UK know about his eccentricity.

Nice plate - I think I may move to the US soon, certainly for the freedom of expression!

I just bought 'C4 WAM' for £300 from DVLA. Visit their website for other C4 plates, I nearly bought C4 YUK!

P1ERS went for £50,000 - I bought a car instead!

I think highest price ever is £250,000 for K1NGS.
