Post Cam Chain Cover - Seals

Hi All

Is it possible to replace cam chain seals without dropping the engine or without too much work. It appears that removing the muffler is all that is required. Has anyone actually performed the procedure?

Thank you in advance

Somebody claimed that it is possible. You have to check the forum. I don't think it is easy. It is definetely not only the muffler, you have to drop the engine by ??? inches. I looked at it and ended up taking the engine out of the car from below.

BJ, it's difficult, that's about the brunt of it. <img border="0" alt="[grrrrrrr]" title="" src="graemlins/cussing.gif" />

The main issue is that it's difficult to get the right side chain cover off because of the AC bracket. The "proper" way to remove the AC bracket is to remove the crank pulley, which requires a special tool, etc. When I rebuilt my engine this Winter, I ground the tabs off the AC bracket so I could remove it without removing the pulley to make cam advance adjustments, etc.

It can be done, but removal of the muffler is step #1. Then you would have to remove the engine sheet metal and that's difficult without removing the distributor and so on.

Overall, it's a fairly tedious job, not for the faint of heart...but then again, it can be done.

I second that, (or third that). I just replaced the driver's side cam chain cover gasket. Like Jeff said, you have to remove the muffler and sheet metal. But it is do-able. The passenger side is more complex, as noted. So I skipped it and will wait.

But getting the driver's side done is pretty straightforward, just take your time.
