Have you checked the tensioner for the fan belt?

It can make a lovely noise when its' bearing fails that sounds very expensive
But is cheap and easy to replace.

Hi

Thanks for the reply, I dont think you understood the posting , what I meant was the fan that blows cold air into the car and not the engine fan. Thanks anyhow !

Hi There the noise is annoying! But can be quite easily cured withe the WD40 secret weapon. Kill the noise by spraying a good amount of this stuff wher the rotor sits! This should help. The only disadvantage of this method is the smell of the WD40, but this is a small thing to endure an costs leats than replacing the bearings.

Cheers Thomas

The WD-40 trick is very temporary, if it even works at all. I tried it and it worked in short durations, then the squeeling returned...so bad that they almost threw me off the track one day as they thought something major was amiss.

Your best bet is to go ahead and purchase a new unit, there's no way out of this one...you can find a used one, but it's bound to go bad as well.

A new unit will likely be the 993 part# (supercedure) and you will have to unscrew the housings halves to remove the spacers for the 993 and put your old 964 spacers in there so it will fit correctly - NOT a difficult task.

Thanks for the advise

I have had a look into the fans and their location. Apparantly there are available at around £90 -100 and can be replaced with fairly little effort (other than the nuisance of having to take the front end of the car apart!) but I presume I could do this task myself .. I tackeld the task of replacing all my rotors and brakes last week and managed to do the job in a little under three hours .. so I'm going to look into doing the fans myself . Wish me luck

BTW Thanks to all the chaps/girls that volunteer their valuable time to assist us "newbies" in these forums

Thanks

Of course, you can always replace the engine mounted fan with a cup bypass pipe. Here's what the installed bypass pipe looks like:
