Post bad shocks ?

I was mixing it with an M3 cab today and had some unwelcome behavour from my C2,I was doing 200k round a sweeping curve on the A12 near Colchester, the corner was was quite bumpy and my car started bouncing across the road, I had to ease back or I would have hit the armco,Knackered shocks maybe? I would be gratefull of any suggestions.

Sounds like shocks to me. How many miles on them? (I'd guess 60K plus).

Dear Paul,
I doubt y<ou have bad shocks. Problems will show up at much lower speeds. You were pushing it, 200 kph and cornering on a bumpy road I am not surprised. I think you may be expecting a tad too much out of your 964 especially a cab which flexes much more than a coupe or targa. At lot also depends on how stiff your suspension is. The stiffer it is the more you will be affected by bumps in the road. I had similar occurences recently in France during my visit to LeMans. I can only advise you check your set up for soundness. Wheel alignment, tyre pressures, tyres themselves, corner balance but to be quite honest I think you were just pushing it too hard in the wrong place.
Ciao,
Adrian

I would normally suggest you take the car to a specialist to assess the dampers - but you'd probably get ripped off!!

Thanks for the info guys,Adrian is it possible to fit lowering springs to the original shocks on the 964?,I thought this may be the problem.
John FM Do I take it that by your last post that you may have been a victim of, mention the Porsche word and "that blank cheque will do nicely sir"
I've sussed this, next time your cars repaired insist its a volvo, this should keep the costs down nicely.

You can fit H&R springs to orginal shocks, if the shocks are worn or old change to the Billstein heavy duty. The front ones come as a complete strut, not an insert. The other option is the H&R coil-over kit. As you car is converted to a turbo-look, it probably has already been lowered. The main thing to look for is tire clearance when the suspension is compressed.

Dear Paul,
I never recommend you fit aftermarket lowering springs to standard struts and shocks. I would not assume because you have a turbo-look conversion that it is already lowered. However you will need to carry out a ride height check to confirm this.
The fact that it is a turbolook and I am sure you are running wider rear wheel track I am not surprised you got a bit of a shock at 200 kph. Please remember everyone that reads this post. ANY change you make to your 964 without making a counter change elsewhere is going to change the oversteer or understeer characteristics.
Ciao,
Adrian

Dove

no, I haven't been ripped off. I was taking the pi$$, after your other post about being 'ripped off'!!

I know enough about my car to know how long a job 'should' take, and also realistically expect that some components, after ten years on the car may be difficult to remove, worn or knackered and this will always increase the cost of a job. I do a bit of simple DIY (like changing brake discs, pads, general tinkering etc) so I know how a 20 minute job can turn into an hour or two - even for an experienced wrecnch with full facilites.

If you build a good relationship with your mechanic (ie you trust them when they tell you things, you show faith in their expertise, let them realise that you too are knowledgable etc etc) you will not get ripped off.

But, back to your topic - I think you will find that cornering at 200 kph on non-perfect road surfaces (ie English roads) will result in some hairy moments. Checking the dampers properly is probably difficult to do without removing them - I would have them check one rear damper - if it is shagged replace the lot.

Oy! I thought we buried the "rip off" hatchet? C'mon, John, high road, cumbaya and all that.

Let's follow Mr. GMS's fine example.

Joey

I am burying the hatchet (though I doid notice your $100 fee for some tire advice on another thread!!)

Hopefully, my advice re: trust & good techs will help DOve come to terms with some of the costs associate with running these cars.

Also, as usual, my tongue is firmly in my cheek re: the rip off saga....

Now, that will be £100 please...

Adrian, Thanks for the info,My car has wheel spacers with the cup wheels. It normally handles like s**t to a shovel,so I am starting to assume that the 200k was pushing it a bit. I may go for a better suspension set up in the future.
Message for Joey & John, You are going to love this guys I was quoted £150 for the seal job and got a bill for £230 lol.I will say this though this is the third time this specialist has quoted an all in price, and then bumped up the price quite considerably when I am given the bill.
Cheers
Paul

Good story, Dove. Perhaps it's time for a new specialist?
