Air Conditioner Advice
I haven't turned my AC on in two years -- tried yesterday and it blows warm. I would guess I have to have it recharged -- I'm told the fluid used for recharge is no longer available -- illegal. Is that correct? If so, what are my options? Do I have to replace the entire unit? How much is that? Thanks.
Jeff,
The refrigerant used is R12, which hasn't been made for awhile. However, it is not illegal, and you can have your a/c system recharged with it. Won't, however, be inexpensive. Some people have tried some R12 substitutes, too.

Hi Jeff
In Canada I've had no luck with any certified A/C specialists in recharging the R12. Pep Boys in NY state will recharge for $30.00 US a pound. Most of the R12 has leaked out of my system so I did a visual check of the system. I found 2 leaks, tell tale signs being an accumalation of A/C oil which in turn attracts dust. They were located at the receiver/dryer under the front left fender and just forward of the left rear wheel. In both cases I simply tightened up the coupling.

Guys again, there is no need to refill the environmental unfriendly R12. I converted my Ferrari to R134A and will do the sme on my 964 TOMORROW. Cost is about USD 250 for the refitting and filling which includes ICE COLD air.
