The electrical discharges in the distributor generate ozone, which damages the rubber belt which drives the secondary distributor. If the belt breaks, the engine starts running on one set of plugs with anything from barely perceptible to dramatic (bad) results. The vent kit is cheap, simple to install, and a must. It just blows away the ozone. You'd think a good 964 tech would have noticed its absence and fitted it at some point. I'm surprised there are so many cars still out there without the kit. Maybe it's a sign there are many Pcar mechanics who really don't know these particular cars very well!

Marc, dist removal is for replacing the belt, not fitting the kit. If you've just fit it, and your car is high mileage, you might want to consider having the belt replaced as a prophylactic measure.

Darryl - sorry, re-read Dunnaso's post and you're right. I thought he took the dist. out for the vent kit installation (as that was what the discussion was centred on), not the belt itself. The PO of my car had the dist belt changed at about 50 000 km, I'm at 88 000 km now but it did the last 38 000 km with no vent kit installed - as I just installed the vent - so I do plan to get the belt changed.

Looking at the right-up in Adrian's book it sounds too complex for me (I'm just getting started with this stuff) so I think I'll have the dealer do it when they adjust the valves, etc.

I guess Marc must have resurfaced the thread from the archives, correct?

I think you've hit the nail on the head, Johan.

Umm...sorry if I did but I did not think so...I was looking back in the archives to try to avoid asking some questions that had been answered but did not intend to re-start an old thread....Opps.

Sorry.

Hey, no problem. Did it answer your question? If so, who cares how the answer came about?

Yes, no offense intended on my part. I'm pretty new to the "forum world", noticed the dates, and wondered... I confess Adrian's avatar was what mixed me up too, since there was another discussion about it at the same time; now that I know it changes globally (efficient use of resources, when you think about it) I understand.

No, it did not answer my question as I was trying to find a gasket/dust boot for my clutch master cylinder (see other thread).
