Had a look at the July issue of GT today. Torque numbers all screwed up on the cabrio 911 article, 964 Cab C2 with 310ftlbs? 993's with 330!! Then a useless 964 essential article with some fresh pictures and a damn history lesson with no actual driving impressions of the cars in the photos Anybody with Adrian's book could have done a better job! Then Cayman S 0-60 of 5.4sec without mentioning the fact that this is the tiptronic number.

Pano has awesome info and merchants, as well as the classifieds and website. Excellence is a good read, with usually good photography.

I do think it's a lot better than it used to be.
At least it has a decent amount of words in it these days.
OK, a lot of them are not the right words...

Good to see Chris Harris writing for them, too.

I subscribed before really checking it out (too enthusiastic ) but won't renew.

Wihle the pictures are nice, they seem to focus far too much on newer models and ignore the classics.

I will stick with Excellence, 911 & Porsche World, Pano, and Total 911... The one I like the most is Excellence...

I'm always curious about 'Excellence' - does it somehow fit the American Porsche consciousness? The issues I've seen always seem to have too high a advertising content for my taste. In fact it was hard to find the 'meat', but I know lots of American Porsche owners really rate it.

I like the 911 and Porsche World the best. The new 911 mag is promising too. Excellence is accurate if a bit boring. Pano is good for knowing where to buy things but a bit boring as well our local PCA mag (The Bent Pylon) is more entertaining than Pano.

Excellence and 911 & Porsche World have some journos on board who really KNOW what they are talking about.Very rare to get factual errors whereas the rest of the mags are , like comics , full of pics but little else IMHO .

Sad to say but that former organ of motoring excellence "CAR" has trumped the lot. Look at the Cayman article (Aug 2005 issue, page 68). In a mere 1/4 page strip about the 964 they manage to attribute to it (and I quote) ...

"Conventionally hinged pedals"

"Early models suffered from coolant leaks from the cylinder head"

"A cambelt and balance belt change should be £335"

Coolant leaks eh? This must be from the same bright spark who once wrote in GT PP about the water temp guage in a 911.

I like that GT PP has got Chris Harris and Colin Goodwin aboard, so much that it makes them my No 2 Porsche mag, after 911 and Porsche World. Excellence is too bland, dry and technical, qualities it shares with Bimmer, part of the same publishing group. I'd take sister mags GTPP/BMWCar over Excellence/Bimmer any day. Total 911 was alright, but the very reason for its existence is why I don't much care for it - it covers only one branch of the Porsche family tree - that gets old quickly.

Well, i actually do like GT... the pictures are great and the stories of drive trough europe are really entertaining. IF you need definite numbers on torque and power, that's what BOOKS (911 story, brian's book...) are for and not magazine (i never relyed on them on this ...) in my opinion (or IMHO stands for that nor too sure about english acronym... i am french ) And remember, even the factory can not give correct weight of a production number of some models...

When i was i NYC, it wouldn't compare too "excellence"... WHERE are the goddam articles??? Try this. remove the adds and try to weight what is left of the mag... well not much. I remember trying to follow a "car project": 1/4 of pages about the said project then 2 pages later, 1/2 pages and so forth... and what about adds for tire and wheels for pageSSSSS... (this one typical of any US car mag)
i do agree that specialized mags needs the $ from adds but here excellence really looks like an add magazine with a few article... Other mag (Flat 6, GT...) put their adds on one section are they are sometime a usefull source for services.

I occasionnaly read 911 and porsche world, and it seems to be a good balance between technical, older cars andnewer ones ... without too much add! Unfortunately for the english speaking only, FLAT 6, a french magazine is actually quite good (honest...) the pictures are a but fussy some time (too much small icon to my taste) with articles about everything with a flat engine (ie 356) from 901 to 997... the tendency is a little bit biased to newer/tuned car even if you get article about porsche related events, interview of "porsche actors" (independant shop, racers,parts specialist...), and a good overview of "older car" .

But as i said before even if i would like a mag about 964/3,2l only, the main reason for those mag to exist is the novelty...BOOKS are here for you to get in depth of older models.
