Post Turning the engine by hand...what size is socket?

All,

To turn the engine by hand I am planning to use a socket attached to the fan. What size socket do I need?

thanks,
anthony

I turned mine by pulling on the belt and lightly "helping" it along when needed with a wrench or something in the fan. I think the socket is a 22mm though. Good luck!

It is 22mm, but the belt may slip so push in the belt on the left side while attempting to turn engine.

Are you doing this for a valve adjustment??

Really?

I have two 22mm sockets but they don't fit. Now, I'm puzzled.

It looks like the nut is 23 or 24mm.

It's possible it's a 24mm, if so, sorry about that...reading your first reply from John, it seemed right - so I went with it!

I use a 1/2" drive ratchet and a 24mm?? socket to do the job...works like a champ.

Question

The shop manual emphatically states that we should not turn the motor over using the alternator nut. That being said I have done it many a time, using the method Jeff described. My question is why not?

Also, you should always turn the motor in the correct (running) direction.

Myles,

Looks to me like the factory is worried someone will over-torque the alternator shaft nut.

I checked my factory manual last night and noticed that it says it is OK to use the alternator nut to turn the motor when the spark plugs are out, but if the spark plugs are in then the alternator shaft should be used instead (it has a 12-point recess in the end, there is an L-shaped tool in the car's toolkit that fits).

Sorry about the mix up. I changed the alternator belt on my 930 last weekend and it took a 22mm socket.

I'm pretty sure my 90 C2 has a 24mm.

Hello

Porsche used several alternators from different suppliers with different shafts.
So you have to keep 22mm and 24mm on hand.

Later alternators ( since 1984 ) have a inhex in the shaft ( originaly covered with a plastic sleeve ). Those are 8mm and rarly 6 or 7mm.

Your factory toolbag has the correct tools.
