Default A/C condenser fan problem

Has anyone experienced this problem? Whenever I turn on the A/C the
condenser fan (at left front fender) goes on and off continually (roughly
3 seconds on...3 seconds off ) This pattern remains no matter what settings
I use at the dash ( as long as the A/C is engaged). I believe it continues as I'm
driving (it's hard to tell since I can't hear it)

Tom,

I'd bet you have a blown fuse in the rear electric panel for the rear blower.

Make sure the fuse is a 30A.

The other possibility is that the ballast resistor on top of the condenser has corroded and failed.

Regards

Dave

Thanks Dave...I'll check both of those ideas.

Just fixed the same thing. The resistor had corroded mounted on top of the condensor. I got a new one from design911.co.uk for around 29 pounds as I recall. A bit fiddly to fit, but solved the problem. There is a diagnosis in Adrians book on jumping the relay connectors to verify if it's the resistor. I also found a link on this site referring to the diagnosis (you'd need to do a search however).

Hope this helps.

Cheers,
Paul

Uhh, I thought that the on/off cycling was a normal first stage, with it going on to constant running when the temp. increases..

Looks like I need a new resistor too..
