PPI Expected Checklist/Cost?
Howdy folks,
I'd say 'new' to rennlist, but I was around waaaay back when it was porschelist.org. I got out of P-cars, now looking at getting back into one now that I have a commute again.
I checked out a 1990 964 C2 today.. Owned and serviced by Foreign Exchange in Dayton, OH. I like the shop and assume they are competent, but would like to get the local dealer to do a PPI (or another local shop if anyone knows of one).
Do dealers have a standard PPI they do? Or should I nitpick and tell them everything I want checked (at which time, I'll ask you guys what I need to make sure to check!)?
What should I expect to pay?
Cheers,
Mike Green

If you seach, you can find the checklist somewhere on this forum.
I think it is always better to have a third party do the PPI, especially one that is familiar with the 964, which would probably rule out most dealerships. Look for a good independent.
I believe costs will vary depending on the area, but I would expect to pay $200-300.

I would HIGHLY recommend that you get a leakdown test in addition to the PPI. This almost doubles the cost because of the labor involved, but it is well worth the extra $. You will save yourself some potential unseen issues with the car later on.

Drifting
The two I had done ran around $300 each. I think on the 1988 Carrera I was looking at it was $350 oin Austin, TX. It included a compression and leakdown. I paid $150 in Houston and basically got what I paid for... They did a compression & leakdown on just the #1 cylinder, but missed a cracked cooling fan hub! So when/if you find a car, post here about a PPI at the cars location. You could also go the PCA Region page and email the officers listed for that ares. If they don't have any recommedations then they could forward your request to other members. That's what I did i for the Austin car and should have done in Houston.
That said, there were minor problems with the C2 I bought but it runs like a champ. Burned half a quart of oil in a year (about 2500 miles) including the trip to Hershey and back. Just keep in mind that even the little things start adding up quick on a Porsche. I've attached a checklist for things to look at. I can't remember where I got it from, maybe here or over at Pelican.
