Post 964 Alt/Fan Belt

I have a '90 C2 on which I want to change the fan and alternator belts on. The original tool kit does not contain the wrench needed to hold the shaft in place while removing the retaining nut for the pully.

What tool do I need to purchase that will fit inside the alt/fan shaft to hold it while loosening the retaining nut? My trusted mechanic states that I need a 10mm 'star' socket. I can't find anything like this locally.

Thanks in advance for your help,
Jay

Look in your local phone book for a Snap On tool dealer...they have the trucks that drive around and service auto shops. They were the only place that I could find one locally...and they delivered it to me as well.

Unless the belt is broken, and you need to do it NOW, then I suggest you try to find the original tool; there was a long thread a bit ago on the rennlist to do with tool kits, mabey you can find it in archives. This is an essential tool. As much as I love snap-on tools, their price is perhaps crazier than stuff from the Porche Dealer!

Horst and David:

Thank you both for your suggestions.

An 8mm star allen socket is readily available from Snap On and Performance Products. Is this really the size I need and not 10mm?

I'll be heading to the dealership on Monday and I'll also check with Snap On.

Thanks Again!

Jay,

The tool used to hold the alternator shaft which enables you to loosen tehe 24mm nut is a special splined tool. It is not a "star" shape and definitely not an allen head. I would purchase the tool directly from Porsche. The list price for the tool is around $22.

Mark:

Thank you very much for your help. I did go to the dealer and ordered the part you describe.

-UPDATE-

The Part Number for this wrench is 999-571-052-02. $22.21
