Question Yet another DME relay question (when will it stop?)

OK, I know that everyone's pretty much had it with this topic, but please exercise the holiday spirit by answering.

My DME relay is 944.615.227.00. I haven't had any problems so far, but realize that I need to carry a spare. So I will order one.

Questions:

1. Will the newer 993 relay improve performance? If not, I'll just keep the 944 relay in there until failure. If the 993 relay does improve performance, I'll put it in right away.

2. I know about replacement 993.615.227.00, but, in reviewing past posts, believe that there *might* be an even newer relay. Is this so and what is the part no.?

3. Who has the best deal on the relay?

Thanks, and a good New Year to all,

Jon,

993.615.227.00 supercedes 944.615.227.00. If the 944 relay is working, just get the 993 as a spare. I picked one up locally in September and paid around $21.

Hi Jon,

Can't imagine the relay improving performance, assuming you're not having any stalling, problems starting, etc.

My old 944.* relay was also working perfectly. But, when I received my updated 993.* relay, I went ahead and installed it in the car, keeping the old 944 relay as an emergency spare. My logic being I didn't want to go through the trauma of having the old relay fail.

Two sources for picking up the DME relay at an excellent discount:

Hendrick Porsche

Sunset Porsche

When you call, make sure to mention you want the Excellence magazine (mail order) discount, or you may be charged the local (full) price.

I've heard lots about this mystical relay and how one should carry a spare to prevent being stuck on the side of the road, etc. Where in the car does this beast live?

Thom,

Aha! Finally a question of yours that I can answer! Oh wait, maybe not...

On 964's, the DME relay is in the fuse box that is located in the front trunk. I have it on good authority that the DME relay on the '84 - '89 Carreras is under the driver's seat.

On your car, since it's a '77 with a 3.6 liter engine, I don't know. Since they had to add the DME system, did they put a fuse box in the trunk?

Just got my DME relay in the mail the other day... Is it under the seat on my late 1989? <img src="confused.gif" border="0">

Bob,

On the 964's it is in the front boot/trunk fuse box.

I think what Melissa meant is the old 3.2's as they were selling them too in 1989 along side the C4. - selling off old stock etc...

Here's where it is located on my '91 C4:
