The little wheel on the sensor that rubs on the belt may be sticking or worn out. Sorta common problem.

the sensor is a little cam that rides on the belt on the left side. It could be set wrong, so it pops between on and off. It kinda looks like a tensioner; it just rides ont he belt and when it breaks it pops forward triggering your dash light.

Also this is one of the lights I had go off by itself when I had high voltage leakage problems. More commonly I had full dash christmas tree lights. I wouldnt think this is your problem, but just mentioning it.

Might just check the electrical connection on the sensor itself. Give the plug a good cleaning and see if that helps things.

if you need to replace the fan belt sensor, it's about a 5 minute job and VERY easy to do. the sensor is available at Porsche shops.

Yes, it does scare you. When mine came on, I was about halfway between Houston (where I picked up the car) and home. My son was with me, and I put him to work quickly reading the owner's manual. Stopped the car, saw the belt was still intact and kept on trucking.

I would imagine you'd hear that belt break. Of course if you have bypasses in place and set off car alarms normally as you drive by you might miss it :/

Also if the temp starts rising you have a good clue. I love having real guages again. Manufacturers have gotten to putting nothing but idiot lights in cars. My VW Golf knew pretty much everything going on in that ar, but to find it out I had to plug a darn computer up to the ecu. /sigh
