Question 964 Euro Cup Car Info

We are in the market for a 964 Cup Car. We've looked at the US versions (only 45 produced) and have decided to pass due to their scarcity and price. We are looking to find a Euro version which are in greater supply.

We are looking for any literature related to that limited production model. Also, any leads on cars for sale would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance,
Mark & Marge Trautman

Mark and Marge:

The Euro cars that are closest to the rare and expensive 964 Carrera Cup USA cars are the 964 RS models. I've read that the only differences as the USA Cup cars were imported were the additions and changes necessary to comply with USA safety/emissions regs. The Euro 964 RS cars came in Basic and Touring models, and they should be a little cheaper than the USA Cup cars. They also come in more colors too. The problem is that they were not sold in the USA.

If you can find it, an excellent source of comparative info is a Pano article by Bob Gagnon (San Diego Region) entitled Lightweight Carrera Confusion. It was in Pano may 1993.

Marge & Mark,

Possibly one of the dealers with the best reputation and cars here in Europe iw Hermann & Schmidt, even though their cars are on the expensive side.

They often get Cup cars in for sale. Look at their website www.911-rs.de.

If you want more info on the Cup cars themselves I can put you in touch with two friends of mine which both have Cup cars. One is a 1991 car and the other is 92 (with the hydraulic jacks).

One option worth considering is a RS clubsport.

These were essentially a euro RS produced without carpets and had a fully welded-in Matter cage lighter Recaro race seats with Nomex covering, fire extinguisher and interior engine cut out switch.

They have often led much less active lives, some cup cars are on their second body shell, some are virtually completely re-built cars, provenance is also difficult to verify as race cars often have a patchy history.

I know of a 15,000 kms LHD Club Sport in Maritime Blue, one owner, full history which just sold for £32,000.

Marge and Mark:
I happened upon a website called www.carclassic.com which has 964 Cup cars for sale from time to time. It looks as if they are located in Europe.

There is a guy in Northern Virginia named Heinz Peters who has a connection in Europe. I instructed a guy a VIR last year who bought a 90 964 Cup from him that according to the Wagenpass was driven once by Alain Prost. He let me drive it. Need I say more? I think Heinz owns Heinz Sportscar Service in Springfield, VA. The number is 703-455-3911. Hope this helps.

The car would have to be DOT/EPA compliant in order to legally register in the USA. As the European cars are quite different from the US versions I recommend you to be very careful and talk to one of the registered importers before you do anything. By the way: 518 (450 plus 68) RS America where produced not 45.

Thanks everyone for all of your wisdom. There is a lot of good information here to digest.

Once again, any additional info (and leads on cars for sale) are welcome and appreciated.

Thanks again,
Mark
