Default Help! No Blinkers or Emergency Flashers- any ideas?

I have been on getting my 964 on the rood for the summer and am left with one problem before it will pass provincial inspection.... I can't get the emergency flashers or blinkers to work.

I checked all the fuses in the front fuse box and they are all okay, I bought a new flasher relay for $55 (yah for a flasher!) and that wasn't the problem. All the bulbs are ok ....

I took the old flasher apart and activated it manually and could get the fogs and tail lights to light up. It seems as far as the emergency flasher goes the relay is not getting power to activate the internal switch. Also, If I activate the left signal light (without the key in the ignition) it lights up the associated signal lights... but everything is dead when I power up the car.

Any ideas? I am at a loss.

On another German car I own, a problem like this is almost always a poor ground (or "earth"). I'm not clear on where the grounds/earths are for the taillights but if you can trace them, disassemble and clean all contact surfaces throughly, then reconnect to see if that solves your problem.

Did you do any drilling/modifying lately? One of the hote wires could be grounding out on the frame (had this problem with the decklid light in my carrera).

I took a second look at the wiring diagram. It seems that there was changes in the blinker wiring after the 1990 model and I was looking at the 1991 diagram. Now that I got the proper diagram I see that the warning flaser relay R32 (usa models) is not the same as the "flasher". I now suspect it is disconnected or faulty. Any idea of the part number for the flasher and where it is?

Thanks Marc! That was exactly what I was looking for.

Do you know where the flasher is located? I have been pulling out my hair trying to find it. Although, I suspect your diagram will help me track it down.

Problem solved.

The culprit was the flasher. It was unplugged and killed all the signal/hazard lights. It appears that the flasher is prone to coming loose due to viabrations etc. For those of you who have the same problem, the flasher is located behind the center console... behind the hazard switch, spoiler switch area. You have to completely remove the console to get to it.

Thanks everyone for your help! I expect to be on the road tomorrow!

Excellent! Congrats.

Does this mean you'll be at the PCA Track Daze in August?

Marc,
It will a while before I track my C4 ... With over 260,000 miles on the clock I have a lot of things to check out before I risk putting it through it's paces ... It's going to the body shop later this week to get the rust around the windshield taken care of ... after that I'll be good to go! If you ever come down Saint John way let me know.. I'd love to see your car in person.

I will certainly contact you if I'm down that way - I'm keen to see your car too.

I got my windshield-out rust repair done locally and he did an EXCELLENT job. I can give you a name if where you're planning to go does not work out.

Marc
