Question Turning your old driver's seat into a desk chair

I've just got my standard driver's seat replaced with a proper race seat. Now I'm wondering what to do with the old seat, rather than just leaving it in the garage.

My mechanic says he has heard of some one who had turned his old driver's seats into a desk chair, and even rigged up 12v power so he could adjust it using the electric switches!

I like the sound of this, as I could do with a new chair for the study.

Have any Rennlisters done this? If so do you have any pics and or tips on the best way to make the frame?

Thanks

DavidP

Here's one for ONLY $4995.95... YIKES!

I would imagine that it would be fairly easy to do if you have access to a welder. Just use the base off of an old chair and transfer the seat mount to your Porsche seat!

If you're interested, I can give you the email address of a friend of mine who had this done
He used the seats out of his 968, but that shouldn't make much of a difference. It's really cool

Cheers,

there are several adapter's out there actually (OMP makes one) http://www.ompracing.it/prodotti.htm...ngelanguage=en
i know there are others out there as well. you will probably have to Fab up the mounting brackets but that should not be too hard (same thing for the 12V pwr supply)

Would you use a rechargeable battery of some sort for the 12 V or drag a power cord behind you?

Thanks guys,

I bought a chair for $59 (Aus) from officeworks that looks like it can be adapted to meet the job without any welding, I'll just put a board on top of the seat and mount the rails onto that. I'll post some pics once I've finished it.

Would you use a rechargeable battery of some sort for the 12 V or drag a power cord behind you?
I'm probably going to go with a rechargeable battery, as I doubt I'll adjust it very much once I've got it in the right position.

The power lead from the seat has three cables, does any one know why there is three cables. Which ones should I connect the 12v supply to?

Thanks

Might keep in mind that the Pcar seat weighs a ton compared to what you are replacing it with. Be careful of how you place it in relation to the center of gravity difference of the two seats especially if it power moves or you could end up on your head.

Yes, I thought of that, although I still might need experiment a bit to find the right position to mount it.

They sell the minature 12v gel-cell batteries at the battery warehouses... I imagine it would work for you... If they have enough amperage. You could tuck it under the seat!

Sucess! The cheap office chair came in bits so it was really easy to mount a board on top of it. I bolted by seat to the board and then attached the board to the frame. Very easy. I found a small 12v 7amp rechargeable battery at Tandy (Radio Shack) that has enough power to make it all work. All I have left to do is mount the battery underneath the chair. (I didn't have a suitable bracket to do that tonight.)

Thanks for your suggestions

Sweet - a few solar panels and a little time in the sun everyday and you're all set!

Make sure to use a good leather preservative so the leather won't crack on you!

Perhaps an umbrella?
