I don't usually hang out on this board, but someone on one of the list serves I'm on posted a link to this thread. I'm very sorry to hear about (and see the results of) your mishap. Fwiw, I just had a ride in a 964 Cup Car when I was at my TracQuest DE event at Watkins Glen back in May. Jeff Berger and Hank Westerduin, two of the famous "F Troop" PCA guys on the East Coast, instructed for me. They ditched their F Stock Carreras a while ago in favor of 964 Cup cars and they now run in E. Great car - I'm sure you'll get it back together again looking good as new.

And speaking of that, are you with Allstate? If not, I'm not aware of another company that excludes any activity on a race track. If you're not with Allstate and you'd like to discuss the insurance situation, feel free to send me an email.

rlynch,

I have seen the photos of your car and I can tell you with a high degree of certainty that you car is repairable. An expert heavy body man with a modern frame bench can bring your car back to perfect geometry. Will the insurance company "total" it? Possibly. But you should buy back the salvage and repair it. Take your time to select the right guy. Don't necessarily jump into it. Make sure you understand the process that the frame man is going to use to repair the chassis so you can ask the right questions. Do not make the mistake of selecting a shop that leans too heavily on finishing work. You do NOT need a body man who only does Porsches or Ferraris. You need an experienced pro.

Many Porsche Cup cars that raced in Europe have been repaired; some of which had damage similar or worse than yours. They were repaired and went on to long racing careers. I think all of the 964 Euro Cups that are now raced in PCA racing including the ones Todd mentioned above have had a shunt at one point or another - including mine.

In short your car will never agian be a pristine Cup with no paintwork but you can bring it back and it will be perfectly sound as far as the chassis is concerned.

JC -
Thanks for the vote of confidence - my heart sank this morning when i went to see the car. But I have sent the photo's to a number of people and the general consensus is that it is repairable.
Currently my plan is to have a very experienced Frame repair shop bring the frame back in to perfect geometry then replace any interior panels that need to be replaced. once I get the under structure repaired I am planning on using carbon fiber for the panels (fenders, hood, wings, bumpers, etc) tie the roll cage into the suspension, Moton dampers, the list goes on....
I am getting way ahead of myself right now though.
I need to concentrate on the repairs and Buy a HANS.
It will never be the same and it definitely is not a concourse car, but if I can still have fun in it I will be happy.
My insurance company is not involved in it at this point - and i doupt they will be.

"Ouch"

Still, glad to hear you got out with nothing more
than a sharp pain in your wallet.

After having a friend smack a wall head-on pretty hard and seeing the pictures of where you hit, I am coming to the conclusion that lapping days could actually be hazardous to one's health. Especially at a track like Pacific Raceways that seems to have been designed without much thought about safety.

And it sounds like the weak link in these accidents is the neck. I would very much like to protect my neck with a HANS-type device, but am horrified by the prohibitive cost.

Does anyone know of alternative devices that aren't so cost prohibitive?

Erick & All,

Pacific Raceways IMHO has actually gotten worse lately - the work on it is half one at best - the entrance to the front straight is a washboard right after apex on the line - Turn 7, no explanation needed. Turn 2 has gotten better & at least they have strapped the tires together (that took over a year to do btw) so you don't have tires flying all over the track when the person in front of you hit's them- that happened to be last year. They are doing it in spurts which is leading to a track that is not predicable at all, there are several different types of pavements. It is getting better but it’s not there yet and may never be. In the meantime we should try and have fun and be safe there. It is definitely not going ever be one of the super safe road courses such as beaver run, Hallet Carolina motorsport park, or the new standard Barber motorsport park (I have not been to this one yet but I hear it is extremely nice) . All of those courses were designed with safety in mind & of course SIR was designed in the 50’s (or earlier).

Yes absolutely - While the HANS is the standard, a simple collar is available from SPARCO, Stand 21 and other major safety gear manufactures. Mine cost about 50 bucks. Also there are several competitors to the HANS system which should be as effective but not as elegant. The Hutchens device is one such system (Priced about $300.00) www.hutchensdevice.com
Simpson also makes a similar device http://www.simpsonraceproducts.com/catalog/restraints/50000.html
for about $450.00.

I was lucky – that is all there is to it. My collar was still being shipped with my stuff I left in Ca. it arrived on Monday. I will never get on the track with out it or a HANS again.

On a lighter note the Healing process has begun. The front fenders, gas tank, steering rack and front suspension are out of the car. It is definitely savable. I’ll post pictures tomorrow.
