Post How to diagnose rear suspension problem (long)

Following the recent goings on with the lowering of my C2 tip, I have decided to look at the problem myself.

The problem manifests itself as a significant knocking sound at the rear of the car, mainly at low speed over irregular surfaces.

The knocking has become evident only after the replacement of the standard springs with lowering springs. The knocking is still evident even when the original springs were re-installed.

The garage have checked everything in the rear suspension & drivetrain - they swapped out the rear suspension - no change, the drive shafts - no change, checked and re-assemble the rear brakes nad hand brake assemblies. Checked the sway bar....

I want to check things myself, so any pointers will be appreciated.

Oh, BTW, thanks for all the help you guys have given me over the last 500 posts - its been invaluable.

Dear John,
Have you checked the engine and transmission mounts. Maybe even the exhaust system. Never know!
Ciao,

Ciao,

Not being a Porsche mechanic, could anyone explain how to check the transmission mounts (or tell me where to look)? I'm getting a "knock" or "bounce" in my transmission (feeling it in the stick) over bumps, especially around corners that are bumpy. Many thanks.

Have you checked that the shock absorber on the corner concerned has not seized. When I first bought my RS it suffered a knocking sound at low speed over bumps from the left hand rear corner. It was only when I removed the spring from the shock absorber that I found it had only about 1 inch of movement. Replaced the shock absorber and the knocking went plus the handling improved.

Did this knocking come from the trans? Did you feel it under your hand on the gear shift?
