If you can't find the threads for the mirror change, this months 911 & Porsche World magazine has the procedure nicely photographed and explained. Here is a link for the procedure for a 944: icat's 968 Mirror Replacement for a 944. I would guess the 964 would be similar. As far as changing the glas, couldn't you just flip the mirrors and then put them in? I know the warning about objects being closer would be on top and upside down, but if it gets you going at no cost for a while...

Buck, undoubtedly the factory nomenclature for the mirrors we are discussing is "AERO MIRRORS".

Like anything else, "Cup" wheels, "Cup" swaybars...so on and so forth.

Some people refer to them as "Cup" mirrors, the guys on the other side of the pond tend to refer to them as "Teardrop" mirrors.

Aero mirrors were standard on the 964 in 1992 and into the 993 series. The onslaught of the 996 series witnessed the demise of the "Aero" mirrors.

As for what color to get if you are going to paint them red...assuming you can't find a decent set of Guards Red "Aero" mirros...that is up for some interesting discussion I'm sure!!

...I guess it all depends on what color you want your "freckles" (paint chips) to be.

...maybe black or silver would be the least severe?

Of course, good preparation of the mirrors will pay a lot in the long run, sand the #*&^#$% out of them and get a good coat of quality primer on before shooting your color and clearcoat.
