Question oil leak concern

Hello to all at first
I am new in this forum. My question and worry about the (legendary) oil leak is as follows :
I am intending to purchase a `90 C2 964. Last week I asked the dealer to remove the plastic cover underneath the engine compartment:
there was oil around the engine head (valve locations), it was wet of oil there but not leaking downwards (yet).
Also a metal bar across the engine showed oil at a joint.
The plastic cover itself has also oil but not leaking oil on the right side underneath.
Can anybody help me to say it is normal or should i better not buy that car ?

Have the engine cleaned and then check again. Overfilling the oil can also create a mess. I would suspect that the oil is weeping but I would not stop a deal just from looking at a dirty engine covered with oil.
I would love a digital photo of the label on the underside of the luggage compartment near the front latch.
Is this a RHD or LHD 964?

Thanks for the reply first! It is a LHD 964 , an original German car, exported to Japan and it has only 31000 km with records proving this fact. I am German and I live here in Japan owning at present a 944 Turbo. In Japan, buying a car involves the risk that you cannot get an independent garage check done, so , i am a bit scared ...
Good idea to get the engine cleaned , i guess i can asked the dealer anyway. A digital photo, i can try too.
Should there be NO oil around the cylinder top head you think ?

by the way, another "concern" with that car :
I was driving that car , and it was a real pleasure, however , after 180km/h there was a terrible instability in the handle all of a sudden and a noisy sound as there is a problem with the tire balance, but it is hardly to believe as up to 180km/h all is fine ...... any idea here too ?

Dear Crossnight,
This is a tough question. It is your call. The kms are very low for a 13 year old automobile. I would suspect that the leaks are genuine leaks. The seals and gaskets have dried out. As I recommended, clean and drive. It may be okay after a good solid drive and the seals and gaskets are re-lubricated. This may be wishful thinking but worht a go. I would ensure that you receive a good warranty coverage on this 964. My advice is simply go with what you are happy with.
Floating at 180 km suggests wheels out of balance, new unscrubbed tyres or old tyres. Mixed and matched tyres. Must be the same brand, same tread, same age on all wheels.

You really have to clean up the engine and drive it for about 20 km. I just read in a German magazine that the pre 92 engines are actually better than the newer ones and good for 300,000 km.

Dear Christian,

I have a 91-C2 which from the data Adrian gave, a pre gasket model. I must admit that I am rather concern about the oil leak problem, I would assume that the pre gasket model is more likely to have the oil leak than the later model which has gasket put in.
This is a real surprise to hear that the contray is true, I would be more than happy to believe you but why would this German magazine claims that?

Really would like to find out more about it and may be adrian can give some advice?

Cheers!

Dear CrossKnight

I've got the same problem, mailny leakage from the through bolts. I get through about 1 litre of oil every 1000 miles. At the recent service I had a leakage test done. It was high, very high. But I took the view that if the engine performs as well as it does and uses a standard amount of oil I'd live with it for now. The engine re-build will happen when I can afford to upgrade to the later design. In the meantime I've taken the undertray off to prevent it acting as a drip tray. It may be worth getting a leakage and/or compression test done to get an idea of the state of the engine.
