Post Recaro SRD Installation

Can anyone let me know just what is needed to install these seats in a 90 C2. Do you need to purchase Recaro's mounting hardware or can you swap the exsisting parts on to the SRD's. I have been getting all sorts of conflicting information from every sales person I spoke to. I've been getting quotes from $90 to $228 a seat. Any help would be appreciated.

(I wrote a really cool instructional response, then the server timed out, and when I went 'back' it was gone )

First off, do you have any sort of bracket? You'll have the 'legs' of the seat, which have the 3 holes, and the mounting bracket goes there. If not, you need to buck up and buy one, or fab one. I you're in the Sacramento area I could help; I've got flat stock and a welder.

I just bought a set of used SRD's. They came with a bracket that has holes which line up with the 911 seat mounts, but the holes are *much* bigger - I think he had them mounted to the floor. The passenger side sat way too high in the normal position, so I removied 1/4" off each end of the factory mounts and inverted the bracket. Still high, but not as bad. I've only mounted the passenger side so far, but I might (*gasp*) remove the factory mounts on the driver's side. I also need to do some sort of mod so my BK fire extinguisher mount can go on.

Thom,

I don't have any brackets as yet. I was just curious to what these brackets are. I appreciate your offer but I'm on the east coast.

Do you have the seats in your hot little hands yet? That would help you visualize it.

Ok, here we go: you have the 4 legs of the seat, which point down. The bracket is a square piece made of 3/4" wide flat metal, with 2 pieces long was which have holes to bolt to the car where appropriate, and upturned ends with a hole and a nut welded on the back part to match the leg in the seat. The square is completed by 2 cross-pieces which tie the whole thing together for support. The bolt holes are lined up where the factory seat rail bolts go. I found it's easier to put the bracket on the car, then the seat on the bracket.

This bracket can't cost Recaro more than 45 cents to make

I'd take a digipic of mine and post it, but with the way mine's mounted inverted, I can't get a good shot.

When I installed SRD's in my 911SC, I used the stock Porsche mounts, which worked just fine. I haven't looked at it yet (winter project) but I wonder if the 964 manual seat mounts will bolt up to the SRD's. The mount in Thom's picture add's alot of height, although they look height adjustable...even so they look like they add more height than stock mounts would.

Yup - way more height. I mounted the passenger side 'normal' the first time, and my head was grazing the roof, and I'm only 6'2" - and this is a targa! I removed a small amount of material from each end of the seat mount and inverted the mount, so it pointed down instead of up. This helped, but it's still higher than the driver's side. I've got the driver's seat out right now, scheming on how to put the mount under the factory one, to drop it another 1/2" or so. As a last resort, I'll remove the factory mounts...

Ok, I'm done with my SRD installation. Here's some pix of the way I set up the mounts. I put the driver's side under the factory mount to get myself a wee bit more headroom, and now it's about the same or slightly better than the OEM sport seats. The passenger side is on top of the factory mount but inverted. The pix above of the seat is the 'default' setting, which would work fine if you were bolting the mount straight to the floor...

Pix for your SRDing pleasure...

Thom,
I don't have the seats yet. There on order. I appreciate the photos. I think I'll wait till I get the seats and see what's what. I can fabricate a bracket at that point. Thanks for the info. It's a great help.

Greg,
I was told that you can't just take the slides off the stock seat and bolt them up. Supposably the track mounts on the 964 are narrower than the seat mounts. Let me know how you make out.

Thanks Guys

Tom911, Bill Gregory is absolutely correct, if you can get your hands on a set of seat "sliders/mounts" from an SC or '84-'88 Carrear w/out electric seats, that is all you need. The holes should line up to bolt into a 964, but I'm not 100% sure.

When I had my '82 SC, I bought a pair of Recaro SRDs and just simply took my brackets/"sliders" off my factory seats and they bolted right on the Recaros. You'll have to take a 5mm allen and cut about 1/2" off of it to tighten up the front mount bolts though...the clearance is a little tight.

The factory brackets from your 964 electric seats will NOT work...as neither should brackets from any electric Porsche seat.

The only thing I would question is if the holes would line up in a 964 body...if not, and if I remember correctly, the older seat rails/"sliders" are easily drilled to accomodate.

Hi,
I found the following link to a well documented SRD installation to an '88 911 (electric seats)
http://www.gagme.com/greg/911/hacks/seats.html

I hope this helps

For chuckles, I measured the distance between the mounting holes in the base of a 911SC seat and the base of the 964, and they are both 16". I believe that suggests that the manual Porsche steel seat mounts, should also work in the 964. On the SC, I used two manual adjusters, one from a left seat and one from a right, so there were two locking ratchets, for additional safety. Also provides a chuckle when someone else tries to adjust the seat using only one ratchet.

Now, that said, due to the tunnel I've seen where you have to remove one of the plastic adjusting ***** (assume tunnel side) and cut off the metal **** mount. The installation I reviewed also used the Brey Krause attachment that allows the lap belt to clip onto it. Again, it's a work around due to the tunnel.

PS. Here's an article I just found on installing SRD's in a 993. Probably closer to what we'll have to deal with than others.
