Default 17 front 18 rear?...possible

Can you run a 17 in the front and an 18 in the rear and still have the abs work....properly.

I understand that the wheel/tire combo of 17 and 18s is about the same size or at least w/i the 5% range for abs to still function.

Anyone have experiece with this?

Thanks,

Why TF I'm doing it is LA roads. Its a highly modified car w/a lot of HP....Anyway, can it be done or not....that's all I need to know. Though I appreciate your inquiry as to my mental state of health.

I advise to look at Porsche race cars. Do you see the new GT3 set up like this? Depending on your car, I'd find the right combo for strength, weight and tires. In other words, get a set of light, strong wheels for that thing in all 17 or 18's.

You also may want to move this to the racing/DE forum...

I think the two previous replies stem, not from a factual can you/can't you issue but an incredulity that you could contemplate such a thing!!!

I see no reason in the world why it COULDN'T be done - as you say, with the correct aspect ratio tyres the overall diameter is likely to be well within the acceptable range - but I can't imagine it's going to do much for the handling. The aspect ratio of the tyres is going to alter the handling characteristics of the front vs back and I'm at a loss to see what advantage there might be for a softer ride at the front given a more harsh ride at the rear.

Simply put, sure you can do it - but you could shoot yourself in the head too, and I wouldn't advise that either!!!

Regards

Dave

Theoretically speaking, with the correct tire an 18 wheel will have the same rolling diameter as a 17 so I don't suppose that will be aproblem....but I have never heard of anyonedoing this...and why would it matter if it was a high HP car...? Perhaps some more details - are you running 700hp and you need more rubber and ladder bars or what...?

I am pretty sure I've seen a setup with varying wheel diameters f/r on a factory sports car. I'm at a loss as to what it was. Must of been about 10 yrs or so ago.

Don't 964's have issues with 18" wheels?

I can't think of any reason you couldnt bolt it on like that (assuming your fender has room). Given the proper rolling diameters the ABS shouldnt care.

I'm curious to know the setup as well.

I think there are a few cars these days that have different size wheels front to rear.

Many cars run larger dia in the rear. The NSX is one.

I remember one that runs 15's in the front and 14's in the rear. Year was 1977 any ideas? Hint Mid engine.

Rufs latest creation w/997 has 19s front and 20's rear.

But you know the suspension, etc. was designed around those wheels.

I think the new corvette has different f/r wheel diameters as well.

Sure it can be done and Ive seen it done on both 911s and 944s using both BBS and HRE 3-pc, and possibly Jongblood wheels. However, I do know that most of the 944s that were doing that, are now running 18s all the way around. It may have originally been done due to limited tire sizes available in 18" several years ago.

If you set up the car to run with 17s in front and 18s in the rear (may have to slightly adjust alignment and spring rates), no reason it would not work as well as all 17s or all 18s. But you may be limited by what wheels can be used and not look stupid.

Hi All,

I know the Lotus Elise runs 15's front and 16's rear. Also I think the TVR Chimp does too...

Cheers

I think with a few more details we might be able to help a little more... You can of course get wider 17's if you think you need more girth....but its up to you if you want to keep your reasons to yourself...!
