Actually, you need to pull it out, and you will find the steering hub interferes. To remove it without removing the wheel, rotate the tach 180 deg, and you will find that you can take it out. The back of the tach is not symmetrical, and by rotating, you will find sufficient clearance to take it out.
I've tried to remove my tach by rotating it but have had no luck. I can feel the asymmetry in the back as I pulled out the speedo and the temp gauges to get my hands back there. But it seems the connector is htting the edge of the dash and stopping it from coming out - how is the connector hooked on at the back (anyone have any pics of the back of the tach?) - maybe I can pull the connector from behind and then slide the tach out.
I couldn't sleep so here is how you do it. I need to do some dusting around this area...looks bad...
Pull it out so the back clears the opening
Turn the tach so that you can get to the back
After I turned it above to the right I was able to turn it back the other way. This is looking at it from the passenger side.
Lift up the black pastic clip that locks the cable in the tach
Here you go with the cable out. Now you can pull the tach out. It will rub against the top of the steering column and the underside of the dash. The rubber gasket takes a beating but it strong enough to not tear.
The 89's must have a slightly different steering column surround. Looking at your first picture, I can only get my tach out about 1/2 inch at the bottom whereas yours seems almost all the way out.
