It was totaled... Unfortunately - Buckled the floor under the back seats - pushed the rear metal into the left side cam cover. It (the yellow cab) hit at an angle that pushed the whole rear to left about 4" - enough that the tire on the RIGHT side rubbed the a arm.

Very sad - I loved that car!

I have a set of standard Porsche cup 3s twist
they are 17 x 7 in the front and 17 x 9 in the rear
I have 205-50 17 f 255 40 17 tires on the rear
Do these fit without any rubbing problems?
I think the offsets are 52 and 55, they came off a newer model 996

If you own a pre-92 964, the chances of wheel rub are greater when you go to a 7" wide front wheel. That's because these cars were designed with a 6" front wheel in mind and the turning range reflected the appropriate clearance. With the introduction of the 92's, the steering rack was revised with a different steering stop which limited the turning range to accommodate a 7" front wheel.

The 7's are a tight fit on some pre-92 models but each car is just a bit different so there's no hard and fast rule. My 91 with 7" wheels and 225 tires does not have the newer steering stop but I do not have a rub problem either. I believe that's due to the installation of a strut tower brace but haven't yanked it to confirm. What I do recall is that when I first went to 7's I had some rub and magically it went away.

So, short story long, the wheels might be fine. You just need to give them a try. You'll hear the rub as you back out of your driveway with the wheel fully cranked. Or you might find a vacant parking lot, crank the wheel, throw it into 1st and gently apply some throttle. The bouncing from this action will reveal any rubbing issues.

Good luck.

One more issue to throw into the mix: local or national club rules. Most experienced solo types know this, but for the novices be careful about what dedicated wheels and even tires you buy. A wider/taller wheel (or even non-stock wheel) can bump you into a higher class or bracket (eg. SCCA stock to street prepared). If if only mod is wheels, you will definitely be out-gunned. Check the rules before you buy.
