My wife & I both drove in an autocross this weekend. It was hot - really hot down here in Ft. Lauderdale and we worked up a good sweat.
Any of you track rats have suggestions for keeping your helmets from smelling like your gym socks? I took the helmets out their bags and have them airing out.

Some are simple odor killers, and other are real cleaning products.
That said, I used a dab of Prell shampoo and a few wet washcloths to "wash" the inside. As you can guess, hair shampoo does a good job of cleaning oil, sweat, etc.

There are some helmets which you can take the inner foam and wash it, if not what I have been doing in to wash them in the bath with shampoo and then you should let them dry well.

I know what you mean. I use my helmet for extended periods on hot days and the forehead pad in the helmet collects quite a bit of sweat. To clean it, I wet the pad with soap and water, scrub it a bit, and then let it dry in the sun. A toothbrush works well for the scrubbing. Work pretty well.
However, I do not brush my teeth with that toothbrush.

I use a balaclava (cloth head sock). It's not any hotter than wearing a helmet, and you sweat into the balaclava rather than the helmet. Only a few bucks, and you can wash or discard.
