Question Spacers?

I want to purchase the 17" sportclassic wheels. They're 7" wide for the fronts en 9" wide for the rears. The offset is 55 for front & rear. Would I need spacers for 964 C2? A 993 seems to need 31 mm spacers on the rears for these wheels.

Dear Arthur,
The answer is no. You will not need spacers for these wheels on a 964. If you purchase 55mm offset 7s for the front and 9s for the back you should be fine. There is a remote chance of wheel rub depending upon the tyres you install. If you stick to 205 up front and 255 on the rear you should be okay. Be aware though that tyre rub has occurred in a few 964s depending upon mod status of the suspension. If you are at stock standard road height I will not say you will have no problems but you are 99% safe. A good idea to be sure is to trial fit and go for a quick burn. Full lock low speed turning going forwards and rearwards will show up any wheel rub at the front and a couple of tight corners at speed will sort out the rear.
Ciao,
Adrian

PS: Early 993s needed spacers because their rear offset was 70mm.

The narrow body 993's do not require such a spacer. Only the widebody 993 requires a spacer at the rear for mounting a 9" x 17" ET55 wheel. The 993 Carrera S came standard with a 31 mm spacer fitted to the rear with such a wheel while the optional 18" wheel (ET40) did not require a spacer.

These wheels will fit just fine with tires up to 225/45 front and 255/40 rear.

Adrian, Viken, thanks! I have no mods to the suspension, so it's all stock. I plan to have 205/50 on the fronts and 255/40 on the rear, just like Adrian mentioned.

I was trying to figure out how this offset thing works. The new wheels are 1" wider and have 3 mm larger offset. So, if I understand it all correctly, the rears are going in a 13 mm extra as compared to the original 8" by 16" wheels. Thus I wondered there's enough space to fit the wheels, unless I misunderstand the concept of the offset...

The tequipment folder mentions something about 31 mm spacers on the rear wheels, but if I read it correctly that would be for the 993 Carrera S.

In any case, I know now I won't have to go for the spacers. Thanks again!

Arthur, you've been provided with excellent and accurate information so far...so now you're in trouble!

Yes, these wheels will fit, as I have a set of CupII 17" wheels with the same offset and rim width...as alluded to in a previous thread, depending on suspension setup, the rears may rub a bit. This is usually cured by a 3mm spacer, as the rear tire gets pretty close to the oil line on the passenger side.

Also, there is a chance with the 7" wheels up front that you will rub the rear of your inner fenderwells while cranking the wheel over to get in a tight parking spot or while doing a "U" turn. This will be evident by paint missing on your inner fenderwell because the inner edge of the tire tread rubs...this will be more prevalent on lowered cars...as will the possibility of rubbing in the rear.

Again, the front rubbing can be cured by either installing the correct "bump stops" on the tie-rods or using 3mm spacers as I do. Installing the correct bump stops requires tie-rod disassembly and a realignment of the vehicle...so I chose the easier route.

So keep that in mind if you decide to lower the car a bit! <img src="graemlins/beerchug.gif" border="0" alt="[cheers]" />

Also, WELCOME BACK ADRIAN!! <img src="graemlins/jumper.gif" border="0" alt="[jumper]" />

Yep, Jeff you're right! Just had a phonecall from the OPC telling me they can't deliver the wheels that I wanted anymore.

My next option are the Boxter S wheels. They're 7x17 ET55 front, and 8.5x17 ET50 rear.

These should fit as well, and I know that Christer has these on his car, although he mentions ET55 for the rear.

Christer, do you happen to have a picture of your car somewhere?

Arthur

As far as I remember - and I can check tomorrow night - the rears are ET55 - I don't think you will have problems either way.

I should have some photos up this week - you will be the first to know!

The Boxster rear wheel is indeed 8.5" x 17" ET50 while the 996's is 9" x 17" ET55.

Viken is right on the money...the Boxster "S" or 996 "Twist" wheel as we call it are ET55 if 9", ET50 if 8.5".

Save yourself the hassle and go with the 8.5", because it's likely you're not going to attempt to fit wider than a 255mm tire underneath there.

BTW, MY car has these wheels for the street, 7" and 8.5" - absolutely NO spacers required on the rear, again, the front rubs a bit, but my car is lowered considerably...so I use 3mm spacers up front.

I ordered the Boxster S wheels, with 205 on the fronts, and 255 on the rears...but now they don't have these in stock...sigh...

Well, I'll just wait until they arrive from Germany

They're pretty inexpensive, I think, about 1850 Euro including Conti Sportcontact 2 N2 tires.

Boxster and Boxster S 17" wheels are:

7" x 17" ET55
8.5" x 17" ET50

993 and 996 17" wheels are:

7" x 17" ET55
9" x 17" ET55

Arthur,

I believe your car already has the steering stop which was fitted to 92 and later 964's and enabled the use of the 17" factory option. I installed 17" Sport Classics on my 91 C4 and, OH YEAH, there is some tire rub when I lock the wheel at full turn. I'll try the spacers but in retrospect, it probably would've made sense to buy wheels with a smaller offset, i.e. 49ET vs. a 55ET with 6mm spacers.

Hold out for the Sport Classics--they look amazing on my black coupe. Good luck!

JB

hanks for the info, Joey. And yeah, I like those classics too. Too bad the OPC can't get a hold of them anymore...
