Hi Arjan,
Had a feeling you would be using 0-40 Mobil One, it's very thin oil and I suspect that will be why you are showing 1.2-1.5 pressure.
You are correct in saying there's nothing wrong with that. My guage shows around 2 at idle and shoots up to 5 (or max) quickly as well, but I use 10-50 Castrol.
Glad to hear the problem is solved.
Take care.
Ade.

I am using Castrol Magnatech 10-40W, and I still get a reading of around 1.5 bar at idle with engine hot. I think the viscosity of the oil makes very little difference to the oil pressure displayed.
In any case, the labouring of the 'I have got 2 bar' point may only make some people fret about something being awry. Don't get me wrong, I think it is great that you get an overly high oil pressure reading at idle, but that may be down to your instrument being slightly out as much as any other factor.

I'm using the same oil as Arjan, and have similar readings on the gauge, that is, if I look at it straight - looking at an angle, which is normally the case as I'm pretty tall (close to 2 m) makes it look less, though.
If I remember correctly, the manual says something like 4.5 bar as maximum, and that's what I have at any rpm above idle, so I'm perfectly happy - and so is my '94 964

O.k. guys,
I checked just now, coming from work, my oilpressure.
During a daily drive from 20 km's to my home, I warm o the oil completely, I see the thermostat open [temp. goes up to eight o'clock and goes down real fast to 7.30h.]
When I park at home, and look on the gauge, at 900 rpm, and oil temp on eight o'clock, the pressuere is 1.9/2.0 Bar.
But when I let the engine run in idle for 15>>20 minutes, the temp goes up to 10 o'clock an the blower starts to run [oil cooler blower, front right under headlight] and the pressure drops in the worst case to 1.2 bars, that is o.k.
Oil gets thinner while heating up!
On the story of thick ant thin oil, 0W40 oil is in hot condition the same thickness as 15W40 oil.
The first numer before W is Viscosity in cold start conditions and the second number after the W is in hot condition. So 0W30 is thinner at hot cond. then a 0W40 or a 10W60.
I use a 0W40, because the temperatures in the Netherlands are not that great.......
Thanks for the response you all,
Arjan

If I leave my car idling in front of my garage for 20 minutes, my neighbors will come up and ask if I'm out of my mind - they think the car makes a lot of noise, pfffff, what do they know

So, Arjan, I take it that the general consensus agrees with my original "long winded" theory?
FWIW, I was thinking about the oil pressure thing the other day and noticed mine said 2bar at a stoplight, this was on a 70deg. day and car was well warmed up...I use Mobil One 15W-50.
If I recall correctly, it says about 1.5 bar on a nice hot day, in traffic.
All things being said, I would take a risk in saying that anyone who has around 1bar of pressure or above is doing just fine.

Guys,
Look in your owners manual, delivered by your car, which says some about oil and oil pressure.
You can find it on page 43.
Please read it.

The US owners manual says only that oil pressure should be 3.5 or above at 4,000 rpm. It doesn't say anything about readings at idle. (I wonder why they're different).

No idea why they're different.
My German manual states something like 'if the oil gets really hot and the engine is idling, the oil pressure might drop to around 1 bar and the oil pressure warning light may go on intermittently'.
Surely this should be in any version of the manual, if only to avoid droves of customers calling in with malfunctions that aren't malfunctions.
Must be hard on the mechanics not to be able to say 'RTFM'
Cheers, JW

You're right - the US manual also says that the oil pressure warning light may come on briefly at idle when hot (and this isn't a problem). However, it doesn't supply a pressure figure at idle.
