Oil leak, rear end of engine

In the last couple of months, my car has developed a small (1 little drip every other day)at the rear end of the engine (rearmost in the car) From what I can see, it is probably coming down the crankcase at the centre, then forming a drip off the "seam", one drip may come down the crankcase, and another may come down the plastic heat shields, and dripping off these, again at the centre of the car. Any ideas??, could it be the seal of the crankshaft or could it be the crank case seal? Anything else that could leak at that end of the engine? My mechanic told me not to worry about it, as it was minor, just put the underpan back on, and I might not notice... however it annoys me, as the rest of the engine is bone dry, and I do not like the 2 or 3 little drips every week on my garage floor

Well, from the discription you gave it sounds like timing chain cover gaskets leaking. No big deal, the next time its in shop for real work have them replace the seals. AND why would you put the under engine tray back on? Most everyone agrees that this thing should be removed to avoid valve guide wear.

You should also check the oil line that goes between the muffler and the crankcase, I just had it changed at Carrera Cup (Alcobendas).

Alex, had that done 18 months ago, and it looks dry. Wrencher, didn´t think so as I though the timing chain gaskets would give leaks left and/or right (and what I see of them is bone dry)and my leak appears to be dead center???

In my case (1990C4Cab) the oil leak was at those 2 (one each cam) "rear cam oil seals" that are fat green oil "O" rings. You get at them through the chain boxs and you have to drop the chain gear off the cams and take off the cam oil seal cover and replace the cam rear oil seal. With the crank pulley off the crankcase shaft rear oil main seal can be seen but I have heard that if you replace a non leaking rear main oil seal (crankcase rear oil seal) that sometimes the new one doesn't "take" !

I have a very slight weep too which has been diagnosed as one of the through bolt seals. It doesn't drip but coats the underside of the crankcase in a film of oil.
It didn't leak until the engine was degreased and cleaned. It seems 130k miles of dirt had stopped the leak, there's a moral to the story....
