Default Intermittent odometer

My odometer has recently taken to stop working, however the speedo is fine.
I wondered if the odo takes a different signal to the speedo ?
Maybe I have a bad connection somewhere.

Any help appreciated.

Craig,

From what I've read on this forum, the odometer in the 964 is a purely mechanical device and any intermittent working is likely to be broken teeth on the drive gears. As far as I'm aware there is no separate signal to the odometer.

There have been lots of threads on this subject with quite a few suggesting repairers who can fix this problem. Try a search.

Otherwise I'd guess the solution is a new speedo.

Regards

Dave

Actually the 964 speedo is the worst of both worlds. I does count an electronic signal, but then it has a gear mechanism similar to a purely mechanical speedometer. My experience with intermittent VDO speedometers is not a stripped gear, but rather a gear slipping on its shaft. If the friction is just so, the problem will be intermittent. As the shaft polishes, the problem gets worse.

I fixed one on my early 911 by putting a drop of Locktite between the input gear and its shaft. Locktite makes a special formula for locking collars on shafts. The number is 630 IRRC. Use a small pin to apply the Locktite only where needed. One slip with a big bottle of the stuff, and you ruin the entire mechanism.

You should get this fixed as soon as possible! Otherwise... If it goes for too long... You may need to sell your car as TMU (True Miles Unknown) and it will severely impact the worth of the vehicle. Swapping out the speedo can have the same effect unless it is properly documented by a licensed repair facility... And even then it may have a small impact on it's future worth. Just my .02...

Good advice, thanks folks.
I'm going on holiday soon and know a good shop who repair them, will take it there and pick up on when we get back.

Cheers

Exclamation one more warning

I had this problem way back in '93 and it seemed to sort its self out and did not have a problem, but I would also look into the electronic relay for the speedo as there was an upgrade. Will know more Thursday when I pick up my car after a 3 weeks at the dealer.

The reason I mention this is your problem it sounds somewhat related and has lead to a huge bill. $4600.00 later with a new DME and hours of diagnostic due to the speedo sensor somehow blowing my DME. I am going to post next week to see if anyone else has come across this issue once i get my car and detailed bill. Good luck.
