Angry A weekend of pain and pleasure

The pain - suspension swap:
Well, I got as far as the front strut top mount, but did that top retaining bolt want to come off?
No.
The right hon. Jeff Curtis suggests an impact wrench, but the problem was keeping the strut from rotating. An allen key drive (7mm, not 8mm Phil Raby- you owe me a trip to halfords!)with a deep recessed 22mm spanner on the outside was the answer I thought, until the allen bolt rounded on me. So I left it before I ruined anything else. Now for the rears - removed the whole air intake assembly to get good access, and the tops were just hand tight As for the bottom 22mm bolts - no way hozay, even with the car jacked up to the eyeballs, and a big bar - it destroyed my (quality) socket, and that was the end of that..this is big boys stuff. Those ally trailing arms look too expensive..
DEFEATED!

The pleasure? - a last minute call to our local quarter mile emporium (Crail Airfield)with a friend of a friend in his black Turbo 3.3. I flamed him, but only cos of his slipping clutch (sorry Ronnie!)and also a brand new Boxster, who seemed surprised for some reason, and wanted a re-run! Flamed him again... My PB of 14.8s/100mph isn't a big deal I know, but man was it good fun!

The sun was shining, and my passenger (Audi S4 owner) is now pretty much a 964 convert..so the car is forgiven for having tight nuts!

Thumbs up

Good story. 964 ownership can have its pitfalls, but the driving experience always makes up for it ... and then some.

As regards the DIY problem, I have learnt that, in my case at least, every single job, no matter how simple, is going to be the subject of a whole lot of hassle before it's finished.

And that's probably going to involve someone else!

...just the other night, I went to fit a pair of ABS 'dust covers' to the inside of the front hubs.

These are plastic discs, about 3" across which just clip in.

Simple.

Not.

It was raining and my car was clean, so I worked all cramped up in the garage.
I only had my jack to lift it, so I didn't want to get underneath. I put my overalls on over my new trousers as it was just a 'quick' job. I didn't wear gloves because I needed to feel what I was doing.

Needless to say, I have now ruined my new trousers, hurt my back, and cut my hand.

Struggling in the dark (I couldn't get two arms under at once, to position a light, and my face had to point outwards anyway), it took me about an hour to do this '10 minute' job. Even then, I had to break off three of the six tabs on each cover, to get it to fit.

Think I'll stick to just putting fuel in the tank in future. So far, I haven't messed that up!

Now if you would only post on my 'RS Brakes' thread, the world would be a better place...

OK, Christer, here's everything you need to know -

1. Take car to Porsche specialist and ask for RS brakes to be supplied and fitted.

2. Go to the pub and buy yourself a drink or three.

3. Post on Rennlist all about how to do it!

Hello Johnny

Must say it was a good weekend. The drive up to Crail was good fun but not sure if the old girl liked standing starts (the smell of burning clutch still lingers on!!!!).
Did you get the pictures I sent to your e-mail. Some of them were quite good. Do you know there is a Porsche Knochill event this evening. I might go down so if you are going let me know.

"it destroyed my (quality) socket, and that was the end of that..this is big boys stuff. Those ally trailing arms look too expensive.."

I learn't that lesson at the weekend Johnny. I changed my discs and pads all round and changed the rear calipers for later 993 items whilst I was under there. I reckon the caliper bolts hadn't been undone for about 12 years and ended up with a 3 foot breaker bar on the end of them. Here is the moral - I have mainly snap-on tools but couldn't find a particular adapter...off down to Halfords I jaunt, £10 later I return with my shiny new 'professional' adapter. Two minutes later, the 'professional' adapter can't cope with the breaker bar and the only bit that isn't snap-on 'snaps' and leaves me with a broken finger. The moral....if you don't have the right tools for the right job - let someone else do it. :-)

I wasn't quoting morals at the time.....my neigbours learn't an entirely new language.

Oops, logged in as my doppelganger again.

Booked the car in to a local 'man' next wednesday. Will post the experience.

(Ronnie - what you doing 'round this normally aspirated neck of the woods? I would have been more complimentary about your car had I known!!
Yep - great drive out there. Looking forward to a re-run, once you've removed your female ballast..thanks for (hee-yowge)photos:have e-mailed you)
