Post Repro Cup Air Tubes

Ok, I finally got a quote for the 964 cup air bypass tube. This is the piece you need when you don't have the heater blower in the engine compartment on a 3.6L.

These would be made from carbon fiber, made from an orginal unit. They would have the distributor vent takeoff on them as well, like the original.
My cost on them would be $130, not including setup fees, which I'd have to spread out over the production run. I haven't talked at length with the fab guy yet about the quote, I just got it in a phone message. Maybe they would be cheaper in plain fiberglass.

Here's a pic of an original one:

Is an original being scanned in for accuracy or is a mold simply being made from an original? Additionally, is the distributor vent a separate piece or is it being molded in? Also, is there an estimate of weight savings over the original? Finally, how is the metal gasket at the lower end being attached?

Thom,

Just FYI, if installing this on a 964 (as opposed to a 3.6L engine in a pre-964) there normally are two hoses, one to the tail lights and one to the distributor. A "T" connection has been used to provide air to both, and I've seen where the Porsche distributor kit has been installed on the cup pipe, maintaining the two air sources.]

PS. You might want to call Porsche Motorsport at (714) 546-6939, ask for parts sales, and ask them the price. I think it's around $200. Robert Linton previously posted the part number as 993.211.341.41. You might also want to check with Gert at www.carnewal.com.

When I checked several weeks ago, Porsche Motorsport had none, Andial had none, no dealer that I contacted (Rennlist Sponsors and others such as Champion) had any, Carnewal had none and even Porsche AG had none. As to cost, when they were available, they did cost approximately $200 in the U.S. In carbon fiber, however, I would expect to pay more as it is a lighter and more expensive material. One note of caution, as carbon fiber is not flexibe as the original plastic tube, the manufacturing tolerances will have to be quite good or the new tubes might not fit as easily or at all.

P.S A thought for Thom. Ask your supplier how many units can be made from the mold, i.e, depending upon the number of units to be sold, you might wish to have a metal mold made.

I have an original that the mold is being created from. The plan was to mold-in the tube for the distributor vent, but I'm going to find out if it's cheaper to leave it off, and one can install a factory vent kit ($15) instead.

How were they going to do this as carbon fiber does not lend itself well to this type of molding?
