A few years ago, my old racing partner had a student at a Summit Point BMW school with a beautiful "grey market" M5. It had the european/racing shift pattern - the one with 1st back/left, reverse forward/left, and 2,3,4,5 in an H pattern. At the end of the front straight, the student went from 4th, to 3rd, to reverse (at probably 50-60 mph). Apparently it had synchromesh on reverse because it went right in without so much as a crunch. The excitement began when he, thinking he was in 2nd, let out the clutch. He hit the tire wall backwards. Surprisingly, the car was still driveable - but it had wrinkles in the roof, etc.

"Great" design. Must keep the boys in Zuffenhausen up all night.
Okay, I'm sure Porsche has made similar crap, but c'mon, does this shift pattern make sense to anyone?

Hi Joe
Porsche has indeed. I believe the early 911 5-speeds had this pattern, the theory being those were the gears you used in performance driving, and it kept top gear from being a reach.

That makes sense, Mike. Obviously, on the the big track you're never in 1st so the dog ear is a non-issue, but for autocross, that setup is an accident waiting to happen.

Porsche's finest, the 924 - had the same shift pattern.
I had one, my very first German pride and joy! ...hey, it's all this Navy man could afford at the time!

Dear Jeff,
My first Porsche was a 1979 924. Nothing to be ashamed about. I actually miss my old 924 sometimes. Even though it was RWD with a good set of winter tyres it took me up and down the mountains except when things really got bad, or slushy.
Ciao,
Adrian
