Brian:
Since you're new to the car and you don't have any manuals, you may be unaware of the fact that the car has a little instrument lighting **** that can turn the interior dash lights from all the way on (their brightest) to all the way off.
The **** is located between the two left most gauge dials (the left most has the fuel gauge and the oil level, while the one to the right of it has the engine oil temp and the oil pressure meter on it). It's the same type of little **** used to control the intermittent wiper rate. When people clean the cars, often they'll accidentally rotate the **** so it goes to one extreme or another.
You may already know this, but then again you may not, so I thought I would post it for you. By the way, you can get owners manuals at www.pelicanparts.com or MyPorsche.com (or at least you used to be able to get them).
Hope this helps.

Thanks Bill - the rheostat has been replaced by local specialist. They are trying to fix problem as part of PPI. I considered this problem minor enough to go ahead and accept the car - they are working on it once again today - I can hope they get it - I was just trying to find out where to start if they do not succeed.
I also assume they have checked fuses and relays - but I feel the more I learn the better.
I guess I better start looking for manuals as I am sure this is only the beginning
