Post 964 to 73RS

To make the 964 into a 73 RS replica it looks like I would need to change the front end to the old style bonnet, wings and bumper.

I think the wings would fit fine
I was wondering about bonnet and bumper since the older cars had the long bonnet.

would these bits fit with a bit of chopping around at the front. has anyone seen anything like this done?

Wouldn´t it be easily to get an early 911 from 1972 or 73 and do such a job. The 964 is so different from the 73 RS that I cannot see how or why such a job would be attempted.
Good luck anyway,

Hello,

It would only to be to have the 73 look and the 'reliability' and modern aspects of the 964

I honestly believe that the structural changes that would be needed to achieve the RS look may well impact on the reliability and would certainly affect handling. I know I tend to be conservative but the change in aerodynamics would be of some concern to me. I am not sure the ducktail alone will do its job properly using the 964 shape. I would recommend that a closer look at these issues be carried out.

Red,

Why not start with something less ambitious and see how it goes?

First, add the tail:

Then, give it an RS paint job.

At high speeds, I recall other, more informed listers mentioning the down force produced by the duck tail was marginal, at best. Here's the <a href="http://forums.rennlist.com/forums/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic&f=4&t=001354" target="_blank">discussion.</a>

I am contemplating a similar thing although not going the whole 73 RS bodywork route. Right now I don't have the room for two porsches and require the reliability of the later ones so a 73 replica is out. Why not pay homage to the earlier style with just the ducktail and stripe? As for aerodynamics, isn't the pop up spoiler based on the ducktail just made moveable for German safety standards. In addition it can all be done for under $500 and is totally undoable. Here is what I came up with doing some photoshop work (not very good on the tail especialy but it at least gives an idea what it would look like.

What do you all think. I have not yet ordered anything yet but plan to soon.

Excellence magazine has an article about a late model chassis that was converted just as you describe in a past issue. Good article. I think the biggest challenge was getting some Fuchs done up in an offset to fit the wider track of the strut cars, albeit in 16's to fit over the brakes. I bet a call to their offices will net you this issue which has good pictures and technical info.

There was a lot of talk on the 993 board recently about adding a ducktail to the 993. I don't know if the 964 and 993 deck lids are identical or not but there is one for sale on this thread: <a href="http://forums.rennlist.com/forums/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic&f=3&t=005247" target="_blank">http://forums.rennlist.com/forums/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic&f=3&t=005247</a> and there is a nice photo of it over in <a href="http://forums.rennlist.com/forums/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic&f=3&t=005280" target="_blank">http://forums.rennlist.com/forums/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic&f=3&t=005280</a>.

Hello

Said conversions had been done in the early 90´s from Mr Eller in germany. I think he made two coupes and 6 speedsters. However he made a own bumber for front & rear plus a own exhaust system.

Conversion was expensive as he also renewed the rear & front wings and used aluminium doors & hoods ( long fronthood ).

Also there was a 965 retrofitet into simple SC look

The Eller Speedster inspired Feustel for his Retrospeedster project.

993 decklids are shorter so they aren´t interchangeable with 901-964 units.

Grüsse

Hello guys,

I'm one of the 993 ducktail guys, like Roland said, 993 - 964 lids aren't same but isn't 911 - 964 lid same?
