Post Lightweight Engine Components

The engine pictured shows a few lightweight exterior compoments for 993/964 engines:

1. carbon fiber "sheet metal"

2. carbon fiber engine bracket

3. carbon fiber a/c compressor mount

4. titanium fasteners (bolts, nuts, washers)

5. titanium pulleys.

P.S. Although not shown, the lightweight alternator saves 7 pounds of weight and, along with components such as titanium rods, titanium exhaust and intake valves, lighweight pistons, metal matrix composite wrist pins, lightweight gears, drilled camshafts, etc. makes for improved spoolup.

P.P.S. To answer a question I suspect is coming, on a dyno, and with a/c, a legitimate and reliable 335/340 HP and 395 Nm of torque can be gotten from a 3.8 liter version of a 993/964 engine. If a/c is removed thereby allowing a different intake system (read slide valves, etc.), HP of in excess of 400 can be achieved without great difficulty. Again, this is reliable HP not the horsepower so often quoted by tuners which is temporary power from an overly stressed engine.

Ok, so now that you've got everyone drueling...
Can you tell me more about the engine upgrade. I know the 3.8 conversions are pretty routine, but I've never heard of 'slider valves' before. I see that Huntely Racing advertises an intake for the 3.6, but I'm a bit skeptical of their claims. I'm always skeptical of people who sell things that I think I want...
Anyway, I'd love to learn more about building a non-pressurized 350-400Hp 3.x for my C4.

Steve:

Building an engine is too long a topic for this forum. As to Huntley Racing I have no first hand experience with them and I do not know to which part you are referring. I do tend to be cautious when it comes to after market tuners and their products and claims as few of them have any real engineering expertise or test facilities (other than dynos). Additionally, there is a difference between horsepower and reliable horsepower (almost anyone can get more horsepower out of a Porsche engine but when they can obtain it for 24 hours under full race conditions then I call it reliable).

As to getting 335 HP to 405 HP from a 964/993 engine, this is not terribly difficult for a first-class engine builder (of which there are but few and I cannot recommend anyone) given a virtually new motor from which to start and:

1. are you willing to sacrifice your a/c compressor to make room for a different induction system;

2. how streetable must the car be (at 335 HP it can be very tame, at 370+ HP it is an endurance race engine, at 400+ HP it is a sprint race engine -- in each case with all that that implies);

3. are you willing to (depending upon your need/desire for certain features/enhancements) spend the $30,000 to $60,000 that it will cost to do the job correctly -- and that cost is in addition to the basic cost of the motor -- on the other hand, for approximately $50,000 you can buy a new RSR engine but this will not be streetable.

Finally, you might like to look at this Web Site:

http://www.protechnik.com/

This firm, with which I have no affiliation, makes slide valve units that are used on respectable race engines.

Bob, (if I may be so bold),

Once again, your work is simply amazing. While it's truly beautiful to the eye, it's saddening to the heart (to know that I'll never be able to put these pieces of art on my car).

Anyway, thanks again for at least showing them to us. And for your willingness to share your professional knowledge.

One of these days, I'd love to know the name of your employer and the reason for the project...(I'm sure you could tell me, but then you'd have to kill me...)

Your dedication to perfection is inspiring and truly a joy to behold.

By the way, is this a UK or an American project?

Best regards,

Marc

Richard:

I will convey your compliment to the machinest. He does work for the majority of F1 teams.

Thank you.

On this engine the improvement from the carbon fiber fan was not worth the expense.

Cool

Really nice work Robert. And thanks for posting the pix. Miserable morning so far until I saw that engine! And women think we can't appreciate art!

cheers,
Kris

John:

It will fit a Tip -- in fact it is intended for a car with a Tip!

To me, some of the greatest art is industrial art!
