Question Ball joint/tie rod end, difference?

This is probably a stupid question but here goes. I know what a tie rod end is but I don't know what a ball joint is and/or where it is located or it function. Anyone care to enlighten me? <img src="confused.gif" border="0">

John,

Just as a tie rod end connects the tie rod/steering to the wheel carrier, the ball joint connects the lower a-arm to the wheel carrier. Like the tie rod end, it has a joint which allows for some movement. The wheel carrier contains the front wheel bearing for the hub, and has the hub, brake caliper, ABS sensor, and strut attached to it.
