Crankshaft help please
I have recently replaced the motor in my 964 C2. The problems started when the previous owner had some re-sealing work done using nasty black silicone sealant. Some of this sealant eventually found its way into the no.3 big-end oil feed and damaged the crankshaft. As discussed elsewhere in these pages, a new crank is hideously expensive, so my medium term solution was to replace the motor with a good second-hand unit. I now have a spare motor which I am thinking about rebuilding, but I still have the problem with the crankshaft. Does anybody know where I can get a replacement crank for sensible money, or whether the cranks can be re-ground and re-nitrided? I would really appreciate a bit of input on this one.
Thanks

For a new crankshaft at dealer cost +15%, you could try Sunset Porsche's "Excellence Magazine" discount. Don't know what wholesale is on a crankshaft, but I'm guessing you're still looking at close to $3k.
FWIW, there's at least one crankshaft repair outfit advertising in Excellence magazine. Also, Bruce Anderson discourages crankshaft repair, stating that "a good used crankshaft is better than a repaired damaged crankshaft." He then goes on to say that "if you cannot find a good used crankshaft and you must have your crankshaft reground, there are people who can do a quality job. Carefully select a reliable, quality crankshaft grinder and have them repair, grind and reharden your crankshaft. Etc., etc." (more detail in Bruce's Performance Handbook).
Good luck, and please let us know if you get Sunset's price on a new crankshaft.
