Post 964 Lightweight?

So there's been a lot of discussion about which sway bar, which coils, which shocks, etc to use.
I read a small article in 911 & Porsche World back in the spring about the 964 Lightweight and what I'd like to know is can I come close to building one of these by ordering the Porsche suspension parts. I got some of the parts #'s from a fellow Rennlister, but few people ever discusses this model so that makes me wonder if the parts won't fit a regular 964C4 or maybe the aftermarket ones are better somehow. But I kind of like the idea of using Porsche parts....I'd expect that they know their cars best...or is that just naive? Maybe the cost is not reasonable?

Steve,

The original Carrera RS basic or the cup racing versions are about as lightweight a 964 as I recall. The basic weights are:

C2 3031 lbs
RS America 2954 lbs
RS Touring 2904 lbs
American Cup 2835 (est)
RS Basic 2684
C2 Euro Cup 2425 lbs

Many, if not most, of the Carrera RS parts are available from Porsche (for example, I have the RS suspension on my C2, the RS short shifter, and other RS parts keep creeping in ) In considering any upgrades, the model year is important, especially when considering the rear suspension. You can read an article at www.Porsche964.co.uk on installing the RS suspension on a 1990 and 1993 C2. Also, if originality is your goal, you should have good financial resources. The Aluminum hood, for example, is in the $1100-$1500 range.

If you decide you want to install cup racing parts, they are, for the most part, not available from Porsche dealers. You need to source those through Porsche Motorsport, or through European sources.

There was a Carrera 4 Lightweight built in Weissach, primarily by Jurgen Barth, Gerd Schmid and their group.

Dear Steve,
The 964 C4RS lightweight was built around a RS chassis and body assembly not that of a C4. In fact the only resemblance to a C4 is in the name.
The basic parts required to build such a machine are,
RS body and chassis
RS engine and control system
Paris-Dakar transmission (from the 959 and limited to 120 mph)
911SC/RS body parts
959 suspension parts
RS suspension parts
C4 engine lid script
These C4RSs were never even allocated VINs.
Ciao,
Adrian
