Fabspeed Airbox for 964
I saw this on the following website:
[URL=http://www.porsche964.co.uk] listed under technical, repair/mods. I beleve John is on this board sometimes (the guy that runs the site I saw this on- note: the site doen't sell this product).
Anyway, sorry I couldn't get a picture up here but a description follows my post. My questions are as follows:
1. Has anyone installed one of these?
2. I'm sure the motor is louder with this airbox, but is it "too loud"?
3. Any real difference in power (i.e. not imagined increase, or percieved increase due to louder intake noise, but actual difference)? I know 8hp isn't much, but the true increase might be closer to 1 or 2 hp. (I try to be a realist with these claimes of HP gains)
4. I would buy this since I would leave my old airbox stock as opposed to drilling holes in my stock airbox so I could return to bone stock. I won't do any other mods to my car (ie no muffler changes, or chips).
Thanks!

Porsche used this airbox cover on the Cup cars. That tells you something. I did this on my 993 and you can hear the air intake from outside the car at wide open throttle. The driver cannot tell especially if they are wearing a helmet. None of these minor mods give a feel of more power but a little bit of this and a little bit of that and before you know it you are pulling away from other stock 964's.

Andrew, save your $175 and just drill your air box as per the directions on John Miles' web site. It is one of the most simple mods you could do and the results are immensely pleasing to the ear. Its not the loud, earth shaking rumble like the kid's riced Honda next door. Its the magnificent throaty, aggressive tone, unique to the 911, but slightly exaggerated. In normal city driving conditions, you may not notice any difference, however, on the open road with spirited acceleration, you will hear the growl. I don't think you would regret doing this mod.
P.S. There are countless threads on this topic in the archives. Have a look for further comments.

Syd- I have a cab like you, which I don't race (on the track) and wouldn't want something too loud. Have you done this mod?
Thanks for your imput-

Yes, did it and love it. As I said, under normal city driving or cruising, you would be hard pressed to notice a difference, however, when accelerating, especially at or around 4k rpm, you hear this growl that the enclosed air box restricts. I can come home late without waking up the neighbours, although I haven't found a way to sneak into the house without waking up my wife.

Ha- funny ending to that post syd! If you do this too late, the wife might start ! Sorry, I can't resist using these gremlins!
Anyway, maybe this spring I'll do it- just got the car, and will add this to the list of things to do, like stopping the battery from draining and installing a new CD player and amp.
Thanks all for your comments!

Andrew, I would suggest you meet up with someone that already has a drilled cover and fit it to your car for a quick blast before you crucify your own. The induction roar at 4.5k isn't to everyone's liking and can be quite boomy.
I hated mine after I had turned it into swiss cheese. After thinking about the acoustics of the remaining cover I opted for 'less is more' and I removed all the plastic and intake horn completely leaving just a ring to secure the filter. It eradicated the boom and just left a very throaty roar under full throttle.

I'm about to drill my airbox, but i'm concerned about db noise level limits on track days. For example castle combe and bedford autodrome circuits have an 'under 100db @ 5000rpm rule'.
Has anyone got db figures for standard, drilled and removed?
I have been trying to get a spare airbox cover from a brakers, but no joy so far.

Greg,
I've just been looking at John Miles' web site & he said that with his air box drilled, he passed the db test of 100db @ 4500rpm. It may depend on just how many holes you put in it!

Guys,
It's just airbox your modifying.
I doesn't make THAT much difference that it would make your car too loud for track or bother your spouse.
I also have supercup exhaust (I drilled the airbox before that though) so maybe I'm too 'nut' but IMO doing this mod and thinking your car is too loud is just...
If you still want to test it, take the cover off & clip the filter so that it won't come loose and go for a test drive.

The increase in sound is minimal at static revs. It only really kicks in when under acceleration/load.
Don't worry about track day tests.
Drill it!

I have to clairify I am a "stock" nut- I need to keep everything stock, except for my CD head unit and speakers. I've always been that way, so if I do this conversion I will buy the cover and keep my stock one. Thanks everyone for your input!!
John Miles- are you the "John" who runs the "John's 964 Porsche Web" website? It seems you are- great to finally speak to you in cyberspace! Excellent site- and I'm not just saying that- I visited it frequently when "researching" the 964!! The best!
Some day I would love visit the UK and meet some of you guys , but with all the money I just spent on my car, and saving for a house that may be a long long ways off!

I bought one and can honestly say that it is not worth the money. The "carbon fiber" version is just plastic with a cheesy fake screening of a mesh pattern.
The advice to drill out, or cut down, a stock cover is the way to go. I would be willing to part with my stock cover, if you're interested. This is my first experience with this board - what is the proper protocol for exchanging contact info?

Will visit & add anything of value to your site John! RedRSA, thanks for your imput! I'm still not sure if I want to do this mod (even though its minor). Where do you live? I'm in NJ (US)
