Smile 91 Cab help

Hi,,
Can someone with a 91 cab help a over anxious new owner. My 91 Cab is on the truck from Ca. and won't be here till early next week. I am anxious to tell if it was made after the head gasket changeover. I don't know the engine serial number, but do believe the changeover was sometime in Jan or feb of 91. Could someone with a 91 Cab tell me the date of manufacture (sticker on the driver door pillar I think) and the last few numbers of the vin.....Mine is: MS462204.
I do know the changeover serial number for the engine but won't have it till next week.

Thanks for any help

Tom

I would love to know this also. Being a new 964 owner, there is so much to learn about these wonderful machines.

Last few numbers of my VIN: MS460335.

Tom,
Could you tell me what the engine S/N cutover is? And where do I find it?

Thanks

Ron

Cool

Ron,

The engine # changeover was 62M06836...its a bit different for the trip transmission but I believe you have the standard so it should be accurate. The eng. # is on the right upright portion of the cooling fan mounting bracket. The other two things on a 91 is to make sure it has the dist. vent kit and check the dist. belt. The flywheel was also a problem and from what I gather will have to be changed to the LUK type sooner or later.

Good luck

According to Bruce Anderson (Technical Chairperson for the Porsche Club of America), the engine serial number for the cylinder head update is as follows:

62M06836 (Manual transmissions)
62M52757 (Tiptronic transmissions)

I haven't been able to find the VIN number changeover, though. Probably has something to do with the fact that the engines weren't necessarily put in the car bodies in consecutive order.

I also found that the LUK changeover came at engine #62N01738 -- May 13, 1992 production date, but apparently a Model Year 1993 car.

Ah well, all moot to me, as my '90 was built well before the updates.

Tom,

My 1991 C2 Cab Tip is vin 461819. It's Engine # was 53999, more than 1200 after the change. So I'm quessing you are way past the change over as your vin is later than mine. My car is a Feb. build date.
Relax - your going to love it! (but do check that dist. belt)

Dear Melissa,
The engines were never put into the chassis in any form of order. If you ever find two Porsches with consecutive VINs and consecutive engine serial numbers, record it for posterity.
The reason for this is the engines were build in batches, shipped around for installation of various mods and fixes and options and then put in a line to be installed. Normal production line process. When we get an aircraft from a factory we are lucky to get consecutive serial number engines. The other thing which most people do not know is that the engines are tested before installation and after. If one does not meet the test, the whole batch could be sent back or just one. The rest move up the line. The important thing for a prospective 964 owner is to match the first three digits of the serial number. 6X engine type and the 3rd letter which must match the VIN 10th digit,
In my case the VIN 10th letter is K and my engine is 62K,
Ciao,
Adrian

Adrian,

Right -- this is exactly as I suspected, and probably why there they document engine numbers rather than the VIN for the gasket fix.

How's the book coming?
