If you don't find anything out of the ordinary with your valve-train then check your hydraulic chain tensioner on the left side. When they fail (busted spring/blocked orifice/installed backwards (don't ask)) it also sounds exactly like your engine except the noise happens at all RPMs.

Sorry to revive a VERY old thread - but this was really useful - the sound clip is very similar to how a car I've found, and I want to buy, sounds.

Any resolution to this issue for the original poster's issue? Any one else have (and solved) a similar issue?

Thanks in advance,

RK

Sounds like a sewing machine. I hope it is not too bad.

I had a very similar sound two years ago when, of all things, one of the locking nuts on a valve adjuster came off when I over-reved at VIR. I took the car home and ran compression, leak-down, and also inspected the cylinders with a borescope. All was fine. Once I took the valve covers off and found the loose nut, I performaned a full valve adjustment, buttoned it back together, and it ran fine. I hope yours is something similar. I learned a good lesson about not assuming the worst and being methodical with that mishap. Good luck!

BTW, I now own a borescope. Don't know where you live, but I can bring it by for a look-see if you're close.

That's a great story, Rennen - here's hoping!

I'm going to send the car for a PPI - get the comp and leak down #'s to be sure. Regrettably - I'm in Toronto and not nearly close enough - thanks though!

I'll report back on how things turn out.

Rob,

I'll hope Erwin will find also a lose nut like Rennen and everything will be OK without damage to your engine.

Good Luck,
Alfred (ook uit Nederland)
