Post 964 Clutch replacement

My '90 964 Targa with '95 K miles has started what appears to be slipping of the clutch under heavy acceleration.

The PO said he had the flywheel replaced under warranty at 30 K.

Three questitions for my 964 colleagues regarding replacing the clutch:

Should the flywheel be replaced regardless?

Should one consider the lighter flywheel?

What should it cost to replace (estimates seem to vary quite a bit).

I've got a garage and tools but no "P car" experience, just VW/BMW and Fords from my younger (!) days, but would consider doing the work myself if it is not too over the top.

Many thanks!

Kieth:

The idea behind replacing the flywheel at a clutch change is to get rid of the Freudenberg and replace it with a LUK. You would need to find out what type of flywheel the original was replaced with. Considering that it might have been replaced with another Freudenberg, it may be a concern. The guys at ASG told me even the LUKs seem to have some limit to their lifespan.

For a C4, I'd steer clear of the lightweight setup, but someone (Andial?) sells a semi-lightweight flywheel that supposedly cuts down on the idling problems that seem to occur with the C4s and lightweight setup. Look in the archives, and I think (if they go back that far) you'll see at least two stories about guys who eventually pulled out their lightweights on C4s because they could never get the idle fixed (even with modified software).

How much are the estimates varying (just curious)?

Hope this helps,

One reputable organization estimates $2200 for the clutch kit and installation, w/o flywheel replacement. DMF cost is $1 K.

Another reputable organization estimates $1600 for clutch kit and DMF, with $800 labor.

In addition, I got an estimate from Vertex for parts:
Sachs Clutch Kit $540
Sachs Flywheel (Dual Mass) $679

I would consider doing the job myself, but have not quite decided on the time and trade offs.

Shoot me an e-mail with the name of the firm that gave you that low price.

As for the Sachs DMF, make sure they aren't selling old Freudenbergs. Porsche (or their supplier) apparently dumped their stock to after market shops. Pelican is still selling the Freudenbergs, but now they off the LUKs as well, FWIW.
